It was one of the most'happened' year in the industry! The reason is very simple. We did listen to music from Jassie Gift as well as L Subrahmaniam in Malayalam! Here is my top ten songs of 2004.
Remember it is a count down.
10. Lajjavatiye.
The Jassie gift phenomenon was the most talked thing in 2004. His unconventional music created craziness as well as controversy. This song can de regarded as the ultimate foot-tapper in Malayalam. It consumed hours in music channels and radio stations of South India. Even the Jassie’s singing has many flaws, some parts of the anupallavi and charanam evokes some good feeling…it may be due to the good lyrics by Kaitapram .
Anyway we cannot ignore the impact that “lajjavatiye” created and it also forces me to include it into the top ten list. Since music quality wise it lies far behind the others I rank it only the 10th.
Lajjavatiye… album: 4the people
Music and voice: Jassie Gift
9.Raakkili tan.
A good song from M Jayachandran . In a Hindustani flavour . The song serves well as the theme song of Perumazhakkalam directed by Kamal.
Rakkili tan tirunadayil….
Album: Perumazhakkalam
Music and voice: M Jayachandran
8. Jugnu re.
As far as film music is concerned, the most important role is to enhance a given situation in the film. It can be achieved by the MD by understanding the situation properly, creating an ambience through his music and if it is a song…choosing the best-fit voice . Hence I have chosen this song as one of the best. The new voice of Anwar Sadath is the “best-fit” discovered by Mohan Sitara , the MD. I request the readers not to blame me for choosing a song in another language.’anyway it is from a Malayalam film!
Jugnu re …is a Gujarati song (may be for the first time in a south Indian film….) and
it serves its purpose in the film and also nice to listen .
Jugnu re….
Album: Kazhcha
Music: Mohan Sitara
Voice: Anwar Sadath
7. Pulariyil.
After many mediocre albums in malayalam Mr.Suresh Peter came with this fine song for the film “runway” . It is a good melody …it may be the second best song from him after “ariyate” of Ravanaprabhu.
Pulariyiloru poontennal…
Album: Runway
Music: Suresh Peter
Voice: Chitra
6. Mizhiyile.
Alphons Joseph, one of the most talented youngsters in the field ….always brings surprises. This is a surprise song from the album Jalolsavam. Some of you may feel nothing special about it. But it really is. It is different from the contemporary Malayalam film songs .It is reminiscent of the golden period of Raveendran, Johnson and Ouseppachan.
Mizhiyile
Album: Jalolsavam
Music: Alphons Joseph
Voice: Jayachandran
5. Oru katilola.
The song composed by Berney –Ignatius , the duo who made a controversial debut through the film tenmavin kombathu by lifting a fifty-year old composition of Punkaj Mullick. However this song seems to be original. It starts with MG Sreekumar singing a kirtanam…etavuna ra. The songs grows into a feel good one and I like it very much.
Oru katilola njan kandilla…
Album: Vettam
Music: Berney-Ignatius
Voice: MG Sreekumar
4. Udayaarkka kiranangal.
Violin maestro L Subrahmaniam’s first Malayalam film music album went unnoticed! The songs did not appeal to the malayalis. The film and music were pretty off-beat. This song is a fine one sung by his very own Kavita Subrahmaniam. It evokes the early morning feel. As I am very interested to know about the “morning ragas” I request the readers to tell me more about them … Kavita sings with negligible mispronunciation and this song is for those who seek variety.
Udayarkka kiranangal tazhukumbol (As the early sun-rays pat…)
Album: Ee sneha teerath
Music: L Subrahmaniam
Voice: Kavita Subrahmaniam
Audio: Music Today
3. Taane tamburu mooli.
Imagine that you are picking shells on a seashore…and you are getting irritated by the shapeless and broken pieces that you pick up…. Suddenly if you get a pearl … how can you handle it?!
I was getting irritated while jumping from one song to another from the worst movie of the actor mohanlal’s career . but when I heard a soothing voice growing into a soulful melody I really got excited! Believe me . Manjari … is the next queen of Malayalam if things are going as expected. Now she is signed by Ilayaraja for his “tirukkural” album in Tamil. How can he neglect such a gifted voice?! So all music lovers. don’t miss it.
The MD Sonu Sisupal is also the director of the movie…which was the worst disaster. He had scored music for his debut film too titled Kalachakram.in which one song'Kudapole.' was a good one.
Tane tamburu mooli virahaardrayayi….
Album: Vamanapuram Bus-Route
Music: Sonu Sisupal
Voice: Manjari
2. Akale.
It is a happy news that M Jayachandran has finally escaped from the self-made trap of superficial music…(if I can term it like that!) … After a lot of mediocre songs in various albums he has delivered excellent music in Akale. It well blends with the theme of the movie and is melodious. The title track “akale aaro paadum” is having a haunting tune. The dedicated singing by the well-known tamil singer Kartik is another speciality .
Akale aro paadum….
Album: Akale
Music: M Jayachandran
Voice: Kartik
And…….
1.Kera nirakal
Excellent song … probably the best of Alphons Joseph… and he got the film critics award -2004 for this song. Congratulations to Alphons. I give rank -1 for this song …not because of the award but for the following reasons:
I. the simplicity and originality of the tune.
II. Good orchestration
III. Nice lyrics and enchanting music that enhances them.
IV. Technically sound.
and above all very Malayalam!
kera nirakal .
Album: Jalolsavam
Music: Alphons Joseph
voice: Jayachandran
The above list is based on my limited knowledge .and as I want to listen to the good songs that I had missed in 2004…. I request the readers to come up with their list of the best ten songs.
Trivia:
Most popular MDs of 2004 : Jassie Gift and M Jayachandran
Most popular singers : Jayachandran*, Jassie Gift and Jyotsna
But if I can give an award called “voice of 2004”, I will give it to both Manjari and Kartik!
(not M Jayachandran)
