Gulzar will go down as the most amazing lyricist of the Indian movies. The old timers like Sahir Ludhiyanwi, were great & they did produce amazing lyrics over the time. The compositions like Na to karawan ki Talash hain is produced once in a century. Same with Hame to loot liya milke, O Mere Shah-e-Khuba, Zulf ki chhanv main chehere ka ujala, Humako tumhare ishq ne kya kya, Pyar kiya to daraka kya, Jindagi bhar nahi bhoolege, Do ghadi woh jo paas aa bathe, Ayega Anewala, Awaj de kaha hain & many many more.
Gulzar is very different when compared to all these GREAT lyricists. He appears to be a genius who likes to play around with the words & produce the lyrics that challenge you to get involved in them, sometimes challenge the usage of words, sometimes you feel a specific word is a little gross in this otherwise smooth song & what not. This genius has written some of the TIMELESS https://lyrics. Very hard to read the mind of a poet, is must be just impossible with this person. He exists where others can't dream! He is like Tendulkar, he is one & only one & has only himself to be compared with.

Kahin Door jab din dhal jayen; Maine tere liye hi; Yara Sili Sili.biraha ki raat ka jalana; Dhanno ki ankho main; Tuzhse naaraaj nahin jindagi; Tum aa gaye ho; Tumhraa itazaar hain(Tum pukara lo); Roz Roz daaali daali; O mazhi re apana kinara; Chappa Chapppa/Chood aye hum woh galiyan & many more.
(1) I was amazed by the Katara Katara milati hain when I heard it first: (1) Pahale bhi kuchh aisa hi huwa tha nind main thi jab tumane chhuwa tha, Girte Girte bahon main bachhi main, sapane pe panw pad gaya tha.Sapane maini rehene do, pyasi hun main pyasi rehene do. Halke Halke kohare ke dhunwe main Shayad asaman tak aa gai hun. Teri do nigahon ke sahare dekho to kaha tak aa gayee hun. Kohare main rehene do pyasi hun main pyasi rehene do.'
(2) Every couple thinks about their life together & in that life there always is one'Ashiyana'!:) You guessed it right I am talking about'Do Deewane Sheher main'. Simple but mind boggling stuff. Gulzar again challenges with the lyrics like'Jab taare jamee par chalate hain, akash jameen ho jata hain, us raat nahi ghar jata woh chand yahee so jata hain.Palbhar ke liye.Palbhar ke liye in ankhon hum ek jamana dhundate hain.abodana dhundate hain ek ashiyana dhundate hain' Also the use of the word'Asmani' versus Aasamaani in this song is also highlighted.
(3) Gulzar was always romantic at heart even a sadist &'pyar main dokha khaya' person like Sahir was also romantic once in a while. Sahir gave many bewafa songs'Gairo pe karam apano pe sitam- 100 Tir chala seene pe magar Begano se milkar waar na kar!' & also'Kitabon main chhapate hain chahat ke kisse' but he also couldn't resist romantic songs then how Gulzar will be away from it. Along with romantic songs Gulzar gave flurt-ish yet elegantly appreciative song like'Huzoor is kadar bhi na itaraake chaliye' Koi manchala gar pkadale aanchal & Bahor khubsoorat hain har baat lekin are out of the world stanzas. Gulzaar-saab kaise likh lete hon ye sab?:-)
(4) Everyone craves for a few moments of peace & rest.! You guess it right Dil Dhoondata Hain phir wahi, phoorsat ke raat din One of the timeless songs & is universal truth sort of lyrics!
(5) Everyone loves off beat songs. Gulzar is Baadshah of offbeat lyrics & songs. It is hard to believe that the same person can write Katara Katara & kallu Mama lyrics! Goli maari bheje main Bheja shor karata hain! One such off beat but beautiful song is'Chooti si kahane se barishoki paani se saari waadi bhar gayee.Najane Q man bhar gaya.Najane Q aankh bhar gayee' LOVE this song as it is very different & sung a little differently too.
(6) India is the mother of all countries when comes to Religions, Philosophy & different paths that a person can choose for their life. Naturally it reflect in the literature too. Many lyrics like'Jindagi kaisi hain paheli haay, kabhi ye hasayen kabhi yen rulaye' or'Anewala Pal janewala hain' are such songs. Later one is a little lighter one but still conveys what it has to.'Ik baar yun mili massom si kali', 'Ik baar waqt se lamaha gira kahi' word of the genius, nothing less will do.
(7) Man Q beheka re beheka adhi raat ko or'Mora gora anga laile, mohe sham rang daide' Choose your own. These are very different kind of songs & specially the lyrics are very different & out of the mold(then & now too).
(8) As a kid I always loved the song from Masoom where the kids play/fight, laugh & cry together.'Lakadi ki kaathi Kaathi pe ghoda ghode ke doom pe jo maaraa hathodaa' is the song for all the kids. This song is again a timeless classic. Chatapata lyrics & rhymes make it very popular among the kids.
(9)'Aapaki Ankhon main kuchh meheke huwe se raaj hain.apasebhi khoobsurat aapake andaz hain.' Again a romantic & appreciative song. Lab hile ho mogare ke phool khilate hain kahi.apaki ankho se kyya saahil bhi milte hain kahi it also becomes a little naughty at'Apaki badamashiyonke ye naye andaz hain*'
(10) Woh shaam kuchh ajeeb thi, ye shaam bhi ajeeb hain, woh kal bhi paas paas thi woh aaj bhi kareeb hain This is my personal favorite & it as tough to select this song as I had to keep GREATs like'Kahin Door jab din dhal jayen' &'Maine tere liye hi' or for that matter'Yara Sili Sili.biraha ki raat ka jalana' out.
Hummmmm! Somehow I have completed the'sin' of selecting only 10 songs of Gulzar-sahab.time for RRC now!
