Not exactly filmi, this one!

I could'nt find a place to put up this review. So, bear with me.

Rather than a review, this is a tribute, not to the filmi music guys(There have been many of the sort and they have been really good), but to the non-filmi musicians. The actual ones who brought about a new trend, which today is called Indipop.  Always, the world honours pathbreakers(if they are successful! else, their paths are broken!) and we have them in all fields. I was just thinking about the ones who have lent a new dimension to Indian Music. Again, this is not a comprehensive list and any suggestions will be incorporated

1) Jagjit/ Chitra Singh- The reason they feature prominently on my list is b'cos starting with films, jagjit singh lent an aura to Ghazal singing which now is regarded as an Indian speciality world over. His albums like'unique' have taken the whole indian community by storm and the best part is that Jagjit has changed with time and his more recent songs feature a tempo beat. Kudos.

2) Pankaj Udhas- Another Ghazal singer of great versatility. I consider Pankaj special because he gave up a film singing career(the easy way) and stuck to ghazals and was instrumental on putting them onto the world music map.

3) Alisha- As far as I can remember, after the success of pari(sunita rao), Made in India was the first female pop album to break all records. It went on to beat filmi records even! Although, after that, god only knows where the singer has disappeared to!(made in?)

4) Asha Bhosle- Another trendsetter. Not only in movies, but Ashaji took a bold step to come out of the stereotype and made headlines with her pop albums. In fact, she even lent an aura to remixes(Most of which are trash!)

5) Sonu Nigam- Again, a filmi singer, who came out with a stupendous success- Deewana, till date is one of the fastest selling Indipop albums and he deserves that!

6) Daler Mehndi- Although Daler was'nt the first punjabi pop singer, he surely was the first successful one! His albums dardi rab rab, bolo tarara and tunak tunak have all gone on to become chart busters. However, there is a sad part too, too many people have tried their hand at punjabi pop singing and with disastrous results(God save all those kudis from those mundas!)

7) Colonial cousins- The reason they feature on my list is b'cos they have lent an international edge to Indipop. Hariharan and leslie lewis, two immensely talented singers have spent their own money to come out as colonial cousins and we are happy for their success. All their albums are smash hits and we look forward to many more.

Also, there have been so many others, like remix king bally sagoo(who created the regrettable remix- thats why he's gone into hiding!), lot of filmi rejects, and even stars like Amitabh and Govinda! Who knows who's next!(you might even see me on channel-v!)

As I said, M2M's will be graciously incorporated!
