Rare gems of Indian Cinema

I am listing 10 movies, each one of different genere and best in that ( in my opinion :) ). So here goes my list with no particular ranking.......except the last movie.1. Golmaal : Director : Hrishikesh Mukherjee -- Year of Release : 1979 I am yet to meet someone who didn't like this one. Hrishida was simply great in whatever he did....but this one was his best. The superb chemistry between Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt) and Ram Prasad (Amol Palekar) made this simple family drama a timeless comedy. I can't resist myself from appreciating the greatness of Hrishida who without using any sort of cheapness in dialgoues and otherwise carved out a perfect example of situational comedy.........recommended for : any type of viewer......too good to hate2. Sholay :Director : Ramesh Sippy -- Year of Release : 1975

If there has been a "Larger than Life" movie in bollywood, this is the one. I think I shall not waste much time and space appreciating the innumerable qualities of this evergreen saga of love and tragedy. The name itself speaks a lot. recommended for : if u haven't seen this one u haven't seen bollywood.....literally :)3. The Legend of Bhagat Singh : Director: Rajkumar Santoshi -- Year of Release : 2002 This was patriotism and history at its best. The sheer respect each and every character has shown towards their role in this movie virtually takes the viewer to the era of Bhagat Singh, the era of struggle for independence. Ajay Devgan got a very well deserved National Award for his role of Bhagat Singh. This movie shall be a benchmark for all directors who want to make movies on History....it shows you the level of reserach one needs to do before embarking on such projects.recommended for : wanna know the cost millions have paid for our independence....watch it4. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar : Director: Mansoor Khan -- Year of Release: 1992 Arguably the most "college" types movie of Indian Cinema and it lives up to that in every aspect. The freshness this movie has....even after watching it 'n' number of times....u see it again and bang....u wish ur college days come back:). recommended for : waana feel like 1st yr of college life ........go see it5. Rangeela : Director: Ram Gopal Verma -- Year of Release: 1995 The best "tapori" movie I have seen till date.........Aamir Khan shows in this movie how to make even a tapori role a class. I don't think anyone except Aamir could have pulled out such a performance. Packed with great dialogues ("AC idhar ghuma na")....great music ("Aayi Re Aayi Re").....superb cinematography.....this one was real gem by RGV. And the best thing about this movie was the way message of love and faith was given....u watch the whole movie and then remember in afterthought....how pure love and friendship can be. recommended for : fulltu time pass....don't think anyone can dislike it6. Swades :Director: Ashutosh Gowariker -- Year of Release: 2004 Shahrukh may have become too indulged in bollywood politics and camps to recognise his true talent but every now and then someone shows him the right way and this time it was Ashutosh Gowariker.

The movie captures the plight of Indian farmers and villages which have been neglected in today's "Shining India" very beautifully and shows the tremendous scope of improvement there is in more than a millon indian villages. The story of enlightenment of a NRI has been beautifully supported by a simple love story and a bit of comedy here and there. recommended for : I think every indian shall see the movie....it may enlighten you sometime in future if not today7. Lakshya : Director: Farhan Akhtar -- Year of Release: 2004 The only movie Hrithik shall be proud to be associated with. Even though I think 2nd half was not that good but theme of the movie is so strong and inspirational that Lakshya stands out to be one of the best inspirational movies ever. The music was too good....especially the background movie theme. The movie makes you think about your life.....your purpose of living.....your LAKSHYA in life.recommended for : getting bored of daily routine......get some inspiration....see Lakshya.8. Dil Se :Director: Mani Ratnam -- Year of Release : 1998Dil Se is sheer poetry on celluloid.

Except it's music (which is out of this world....Rehman is GOD) and cinematography nothing is exceptional about this film but even then there is something about this movie which makes me include it in this list. It is one of the few movies which I think could have been masterpiece.....but it just falls short of that......anyways Shahrukh has performed brilliantly..he is too good as a lover.......manisha also potrays the clash between love and ideology perfectly.....preity is looking cute...as required :)recommended for : wanna try something different......watch Dil Se.9. Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda :Director: Shyam Benegal -- Year of Release : 1993Most of the ppl haven't even heard of this movie.....quite natural also, it's an art house movie based on the novel of same name by Dharamvir Bharati.

This is the life story of a man Manek Mullah (Rajit Kapoor) and the lessons he has learnt from it. He tells three differenet stories which are linked to each other in some way. It's a complex and beautiful picturisation of relaties of life and underlines the point that "Conditions are more important than one's ambitions".I will summarise it with a line....."Great movies start after you leave the theatre".....this is one of those.recommended for : must see for art movie fans.....u shall see if u wanna see mature cinema.10. Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi : Director: Sudhir Mishra -- Year of Release: 2003 As I said in at the start of this review......I consider all above movies at par.....but this one is different....this is the mother of all......this is cinema at it's expressive best. This class act by Sudhir Mishra is too good to believe.....and I can't justify the greatness of this movie in words..........it's way way above any other movie. Who says that Indian movies do not deserve oscar.recommended for : everyone who loves cinema........please see it once....i m sure u won't regret it......
