Well instead of putting together the top 5 in a list I'll try to go about it diff way.

Year 1992. I was in school. Till that day I didnt have any favourite film. Watching films was like being in a fantasy world for 3 hrs. Those days there was no cable also. So watching movies was also very rare. Then a film called JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDAR hit the theatres. I was in ahmedabad . I still remember the traffic jams around Drive In theatre for a whole week. When I saw the movie  I felt something which I had never felt ever befor while wtching any other movie. That feeling was ''being able to identify with the characters & the film''. Which means the film felt real. I had even baught the VHS tape of JJWS & used to watch it almost everyday. I had the audio tape also. There was not 1 boring scene in this film. For the first time I became a fan of a filmstar & that was AMIR KHAN. Iam still his fan. The supporting cast was mindboggling too. Manik as Amirs elder brother deserves the best supporting actor award. But then if I talk about award this was the year when it became known that filmfare can be bought, a instead of amir khan it was anil kapoor who won the award. This was also Pooja Bedi's moment in Bollywood. She was WOW. I can go on & on about it....

Then things went on in Bollywood like business as usual. Pathetic film continued to be made & once in a blue moon a rare moment of cinematic glory would come out ...like...SHIVA , GHAYAL , RANGEELA , AKELE HUM AKELE TUM.

1998  I was in 2nd year of college by this time. Cable was a part of our life. So by now having got a taste of Hollywood movies , watching hindi films became very rare. But around this time I had watched a few amazing movies. Platoon, Forest Gump & lotsa other films... Then in 1 month I saw 2 movies which changed my life. PULP FICTION & SATYA. I think 'coz I saw both the films in the same week, the impact was such. I still remember pleading my friends in hostel to come with me for a unknown film called SATYA with no ''hero'' in it. they relented. And by the interval all of them were talking the Bhiko Matre LINGO. Satya was a masterpiece which wasnt expected till it happened of bollywood. No other film has been able to mix the realism of ''Festival Films'' to the roller coster world of bollywood. And it happened thanx to 3 men- ANURAG KASHYAP , RAM GOPAL VERMA , & MANOJ BAJPAI. I have the VHS tape of Satya too & watch it from time to time. From then on Ram Gopal verma had literraly become an industry of producing the only talented guys in Bollywood. All his assistants r making waves E.NIWAS ...then last week I watched Chandni Bar another superb movie.

Then in between I saw some more exceptionaly good hindi films.

JAANE BHI DO YAROON- The Mahabharat scene in this film is according to me the ''BEST SCENE EVER'' of indian cinema. It was hilarious. It had almost everybody from the parallel cinema of 80's. And the result shows. Naseer, Pankaj kapur, Satish Shah, Neena Gupta, JBDY is a milestone in indian cinema. End of the story.

CHASHME BADDOOR- Another classic from the 80's. This time its Farooqh Shaikh all the way alongwith perfect supporting cast of Ravi baswani, Rakesh Bedi, & ''Miss Chamko'' Deepti Naval. I esp love the part where Farooqh & Deepti goto a park for a dat & wonder why theres no background music like it happens in hindi films where the hero & herione sing around trees.

GOLMAAL- Talking about 80's parallel movement how can one forget AMOL PALEKAR. Golmaal remains another masterpiece which has continued to impress audiences of every generation from the time of its release. Utpal Dutt & Amol have given us quite a few amazing films together.

SHOOL- E.NIWAS went on from being a spot boy to a director. And whatta debut film he made. The likes of Karan Johors & CHopras & Barjatiyas cannot even dream of making such good films. Wonder these dudes r really film makers of business men who like marwari kids take over from their fathers. Manoj bajpai gave a hard hitting performance in this film with a wonderful supporting cast.

CHANDNI BAR- A full fledged 2 hr hindi film without any song...FINALLY!!!!!! And whatta hard hitting film this was. The script was great, the acting was great & so was the direction. Tabu has booked the best actress award for this year for sure. The last 30 mins of the film is gets very depressing. Films like these give film lovers like me  reasons to be hopeful about indian cinema.

CHUPKE CHUPKE -the magic Dharmendra Paaji ...Dharmendra deserved an award for this film. ''Shudh Hindi, Botany, Literature & Romance''. Om Prakash, Bachchan & Sharmila Tagore also give wonderful performances as the supporting cast in this wonderful HrishiDA film.

DIL CHAHTA HAI - A TRENDSETTER of a film in the midst of very mediocare standards of filmmaking. Though Farhan Akhtar tried to do a lot of thingsin 1 film thus spoiling the pace & fun he generated in 1st half but this film deserves the credit for setting a new trend. Sync Sound recording on the sets, perfect acting by SAIF & AAMIR, very hip looking rich dudes with ultra cool lifestyle.

Last but not the least. The film which must be on every ones list. Yeah I'm talking about THE Hindi Film - SHOLAY. Sholay was not just a film. It was an event in indian history. Making a film so technically brilliant at that time was WOW. Every Scene of Sholay has become a classic. The menance of Gabbar Singh. The ''Tumhara naam kya hai basanti'' comments from Amitabh, The carefree funloving Veeru, The Angrezo ke jamane ke jailor, Surma Bhopali, The THAKUR Sanjeev Kumar, The classic Widow of Jaya Bhaduri, The nonstopd chatterbox of BASANTI, .....Everything about SHOLAY was CLASSIC.

There r other films also which deserve metion

DROHKAAL

BANDIT QUEEN

ARDH SATYA

SARFAROSH

SHIVA

ANDAAZ APNA APNA

JEWEL THIEF

PATI PATNI aur WOH( Sanjeev Kumar)

AND most of the AMOL PALEKAR & FAROOQ SHAIKH films.

Before I end I must mention another film which will enter my top 5 soon- Anurag Kashyap's PAANCH. It has been blocked by Censor Board  for

1- Not having any social message

2- Too violent & dark

3- Double Meaning dialogues etc etc

Now doesnt that make one laugh? Anyway if censor board blocks it it will become India's 1st Underground Cult film & if released it mite be the film which changes the way films r made here. ALL THE BEST ANURAG!!!!!!

Well well well....How on earth could I forget a film like MASOOM...i should be beheaded for this crime....URGHHHhhh.... So with due apologies to all the genuine film lovers in Mouthshut I inlude masoom one of my THE favourite hindi films...it will be in top 5. The move was an masterpiece. The songs r the best songs of hindi cinema EVER!!! Infact till date there r only 2 hindi film albums I have kept & they r JJWS & Massom. TUJHSE NARAAZ NAHI ZINDAGI HAIRAAN HUN MAIN.....wow....  And imagine this was the debut film of Shekhar Kapoor.
