I have been a movie-lover since I can remember. I just love the concept of story telling with a little, a little dancing, a little (mind you just a little) rona-dhona and happy endings.

I laugh and cry throughout the whole movie....sometimes I even do both at the same time!! I first saw this one I fell in love with all the characters in the film. Rajesh Khanna just lived the role!! Amitabh was super ...can we imagine anyone else playing these two roles?! The casting, the story&screenplay,the dialogues,the music...everything was so perfect.

Actors like Jagdeep(Soorma Bhopali),Asrani(Angrezon ke zamaane ka jailor),Viju Khote(Kaalia),Mac Mohan(Sambha),Keshto Mukherjee(Hariram Nai), Leela Misra(Mausi) have all made 100s of films but are remembered best for their roles in Sholay.Even an actor like Amzad Khan could not put up a more impressive performance in any film after this.I just loved Hema Malini as the chatter-box taangewaali in this film.Amitabh B.---- great as always. Dharamendra was likeable here,Sanjeev Kumar was good too.The dialogues became so popular that everybody knew them by heart!!
- KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA AND JO JEETA WAHI SIKANDER :
a). KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA:
Shahrukh Khan is a normal 18-20 year old... who doesn't like to study,fails in his exams ,would rather hang out with his friends,lies to his parents,lies to his best friends,even lies to the priest.
He is in love with Anna who is in love with Chris....he tries every trick in the book to create differences between the two and almost succeeds.
There is a good side to him too.When his parents are celebrating his success in his exams,he does not hesitate to confesses in front of everyone that he had lied to his parents about his result.
b). JO JEETA WAHI SIKANDER :
Aamir Khan too fails in his exams,lies to get the girl of his dreams,steals from his father.He takes advantage of the-sweet-girl-next-door,who is madly in love with him.
But when a tragedy strikes the family,we are introduced to another side of the same teenager. He fulfills his father's dream by winning the cycling championship.
I still remember how we got off our seats to cheer Sanju in the last leg of the cycle race at the theatre.Simply wonderful acting by Aamir Khan,Kulbhushan Kharbanda,Mamik(hey,where is he now?),Deepak Tijori.This was probably the only movie in which Ms.Ayesha Jhulka was tolerable !!
- SHAKTI :
This was the story of an honest cop and his son,played brilliantly by Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.The honest cop's son is kidnapped by the villain(Amrish Puri) and the son(who grows up to become Amitabh)overhears a telephone conversation... where,to his shock and grief,he hears his father telling his captors that they can kill his son if they want to but he will not give in to their demands.
This incident changes the son's life forever.Although he loves his father,he cannot forget the incident and is never able to trust him.
Terrific performances from the two.Rakhee was cast as Amitabh mother,she too did a wonderful job.Smita Patil played the Amitabh's love interest in the movie.
- JAAGTE RAHO :
This is the story of a poor villager who comes to town looking for work.He enters a posh neighbourhood to drink water.People think that he is a thief and chase him.To save his life he hides in each and every house there and is shocked at things that go on behind closed doors.
Raj Kapoor played the poor villager absolutely brilliantly.He emoted through his eyes and expressions throughout the movie,did not speak even one word throughout the movie.When he gets caught in the end and everybody is ready to beat him to death,we hear him lash out all the society-wallahs for leading a double life.What a performance!! This film also featured Motilal and Nargis in cameos.
- TEESRI KASAM :
Heeraman(Raj Kapoor) is carrying a passenger Heerabai (Waheeda Rehaman) to a nearby village fair in his bullock cart.The journey takes 3-4 days and a friendship develops between the two. Heerabai realises that inspite of knowing about her profession(a tamashewaali),Heeraman respects her and is ready to fight with anyone who treats her with disrespect.She wants to start a life with him but cannot because the zamindar of her village wants her at any cost.With a heavy heart,she bids 'goodbye' to Heeraman.
Both Raj Kapoor and Waheeda Rehaman simply lived the role of the characters they played.This was one of the few movies where Iftekhaar was not wearing his trademark POLICE UNIFORM.He played the role of this mean and evil zamindar.
- MERA NAAM JOKER :
The film starts with Raju performing his final show on stage...in the audience are three ladies(Simi Grewal,a Russian actress and Padmini).Then starts the flashback,telling us Raju's story.A very touching tale of a simple man,who falls in love with these women at different stages of his life and ends up heart broken each time.
We are made to understand right at the start that Raju's mother is not in favor of her son following his father's footsteps and becoming a clown.Raju's father had died in a freak accident during his show so she is scared of losing her son,too.One night she discovers that Raju will be performing as a clown at a circus,she comes to the show...but when she sees her son fall off from a height,she just collapses and dies,right in front of her son's eyes.
As much as Raju is grieving ...he cannot show his tears because a clown can never cry...his job is to make people laugh!!
- JAANE BHI DO YAARON :
This is probably the best comedy film ever made.
This is a movie about two bumbling photographers Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Baswani,who are hired by a newspaper editor(Bhakti Barve) to expose the nexus between two warring property developers(Pankaj Kapoor and Om Puri) and the dishonest and corrupt Commissioner(Satish Shah).
It so happens that NS and RB inadvertently stumble upon the Commissioner's dead body and also manage to identify the killer.The rest of the film is how they lose the corpse and also how thereafter everybody is after everybody else to get hold of it.
Each sequence left me clutching my stomach and laughing till I cried!!
Some of the memorable and hilarious dialogues are.....
a) wrong number....dial theek kiya karo....
b)kutch ke registaan ka naam suna hai....haan sir,bahut bada hai....usse aur badhne mat do,cement mein raet mila do....
d)sorry,gir gaya tha....bahut girey huey aadmi ho tum....
9). DIL CHAHTA HAI :
It's the story of three friends Akash(Aamir Khan),Samir(Saif Ali Khan) and Sidhharth(Akshaye Khanna).Each has his own view of life,love and career in general.
Akash does not believe in love at all.Samir,on the other hand,is confused about everything---from love to life.Sid is the sensible one here----a man of few words.
The story is essentially about the changes in the lives of these three from happy-go-lucky college kids to mature adults.How Akash and Samir meet and win over the love of their lives.How Sid's life and the friendship between the three changes with the advent of Tara(Dimple Kapadia) into his life.
10). EK RUKA HUA FAISLA :
The police arrest a teenager who is accused of stabbing his old and frail father to death.The jury has to come up with the decision :GUILTYor NOT GUILTY.All but one juror among the 12 feel that the boy is guilty.The whole movie is about how that particular juror put forth his thoughts and manages to convince the other eleven that the boy could also be innocent.By the end of the movie,all of them feel that the boy is NOT GUILTY.
These are the movies I've liked over the years solely because they had great stories,sincere performances ,simple yet powerful way of story telling by the direct
