Ads From A Commercial Killer’s Good Books

Mere seene mein bhi hain dil, hain mere bhi kuch armaan. Muje killer to na samjo, main hoon aakhir ek Indian Why? Bcos my previous revu may hav painted me a trigger happy, serial commercial killer. But there is a soft side in me that appreciates good ads.

Making Of a Good Ad: A good ad is one which is a joy to watch, is pro-life in content. It doesn’t try to sell you something by making it appealing to ur senses. Good ads make you think. It recognizes human worth & doesn’t try to create stereotypes, doesnt declare a man cursed just bcos he has dark skin, doesn’t denigrate women by projecting them as objects. It has clean humor in it. It has no subliminal foreign msg in it. It showcases Indian values. Above all it doesn’t spread terror among people by scaring u into buying somethingthey essentially leave a mark on our minds while many leave a stain. here is the listWah=My coments

1 Malayala Manorama Classifieds: MM is a 118yr old newspaper. The ad is about its classifieds.

Story: a guy has shipwreck & is castaway on an island. He salvages a bag which has MM newspaper. He opens it. Finds the classifieds Ad form, fills it up, cuts the form, puts it in empty bottle, throws it into sea–next frame-a rescue ship is arriving!

Wah: what a way to say that their classifieds bring sure fast response.

2 Meezan Gold: appears on Malayalam chanels.

Story: there is no story, just actor sreenivasan saying some words that make you make notice this ad.

Wah: Sreenivasan is an ugly duckling compared to heroes in films. This ad makes a spoof of stars endorse jewelry shops. He says ‘meezan gold is so good that it doesn’t need the superstars to vouch for it. They said sreenivasan will do. But after seeing their gold I realize even I wasn’t needed’. Actually a lot is lost in translation as I cant convey that light Malayalam humor

3 Govt Ads: sarkari ads creating awareness abt service tax, pulse polio, rural health, AIDS, jago grahak jago etc

Story: simple stories, sometimes celebs joining in like that SRKs multirole ad. The ad where kids discuss service tax & a tecacher drops in. or that Rural health campaign that has a bollywood mother saying “female foeticide is murder”. AIDS awareness ads like the one that has rajpal yadav are good.

Wah: what I like abt these ads-they are intended at creating awareness & are not misleading like other ads where money making is the motive.

4 BSNL: the whole range of BSNL ads.

Story: tends to be very Indian. Have u seen the ad where the telephone cable is compared to ambilical chord or the ad where everyone in the family asks for one service. Someone asks for internet, someone for hotline, someone fax etc & then great Indian bhabhi prays ‘eisi service jo in sakbki maang poora karey’. Still the best has to be that ad ‘ek ladka hain’, ek ladki hain’ ‘ek kundli hain’ ladki ka naam pooja hain’…. ;-)

Wah I like the sheer indianess. Its good that the kundli hain ad ends soon or we would be witness to their marriage too ;-)

5 ICICI & western union: ads of all ICICI products – hum hain na, voh pal tasalli etc including regional versions

Story: shows situations in life where someone says ‘hum hain na’ like the groom telling the bride, the teacher assuring mother of LKG kid. The insurance ads with the song ‘voh pal tasalli dete hain…. ‘ with scenes where a a weeping bride finds a shoulder to lean on or the kid who has his dad’s shoulders sleep on, are cute ;-) similarly western union ads of karva chauth & a son sending money in time for sisters weddning or a fathers hear aid.

Wah: for sheer Indianness & real life situations. I think it was a great idea to use the great Indian sindhoor as the symbol of protection. I like the ‘voh pal tasalli..’ ad as I myself look forward to marriage & family. the ad reminds me of an occasion in train where a felo traveler’s baby slept on my shoulders. To have a baby sleep while its in ur hands is one of the greatest joys.

6 Tech ads of IBM, Samsung TV, Samsung phone, Motorola handsets

Story: tends to be global made with attention to detail. The IBM Helpdesk series of ads with RFID tracking of lost inventory or bank robbers being told abt digital security are too good. The Samsung ads with ‘with Samsung its not difficult to imagine’ punch line are classic. In one u have a guy taking neighbors TV delivered & then being tempted to say NO. The phone ad where a guy gets promotion or the one where a guy gets shot because ‘it wasn’t meant for him’ have some hitech humor in them. Have u seen that motorazr ad where a gadge filled home folds itself into a handset or the ad where a cap wearing girl picks a Motorola handset out of thin air, the background song says “so happy…”

Wah: these are products that really work, so the ads cant be misleading. The foreign creative touch is only too visible in the ads + no celebs.

7 Airtel koyi to limit hoga ads of airtel lifetime incoming free trap ;-)

Story: stars SRK as sardar & bihari double roles. There is also a south Indian version where the ‘limited act’ is eating 150 idlis. Plot is first discussing a limited act, then one asks ‘har cheez ka koyi to limit hoga’ the other makes the revelation that ‘airtel incoming doesn’t have limits’. SRK does well.

Wah SRK, the humor content, acting are good. Let me warn you Airtel has lot of limitations ;-)

8 gum ads: ads of Happydent, orbit & mentos

Story the first 2 say how white ur teeth can be & the 3r does ‘dhimag ki batti jala de’. Happydent has a photgrpaher using the sparkling white teeth the flash light. Orbit has one particular Dr prakash batwadekar telling how chewing this helped make the greenish teeth of a cow sparkling white. He concludes ‘if it works on animals it works on humans also as we are also animals’. Another ad has the doctor studying in light coming from the cow’s teeth. Mentos has a classroom & a barbershop ad where they use brains in difficult situations.

Wah all is good in love, war & humor. Despite their lack of logic I like them for the clean humor they have.

9 Fevicol Ads all fevicol, fewiquik ads

Story:all have humorous stories to them like the hen eating out of fevicol dibba producing unbreakable eggs, or the hanging heroine falling off when fevicol is taken off from above the TV, fevicol kid ad. Or a person using fewiquick to catch fish!

Wah the humor in the ads, their way of projecting their product

10 hat ke soap ads chandrika & lexus soap

story chandrika ad doenst harass u by making u look at a woman bathing. It has two soaps jumping on to ur TV, then a Reynolds pen jumps & writes ‘buy 2 soaps, get 1 pen free’–u see no human intervention. The lexus soap ad is different from regular soap ads which are always making us imagine a girl taking bath as if it was romancing the soap. Here a girl runs around with soap & with all clothes on she romances the dry soap.

Wah hat ke ads

Thanks 4 reading, coments welcome
