Hip Shakers...

They say that no bollywood movie is complete without a few song n dance sequences. Maybe that statement is not far from truth. Indeed, here in India, a brilliantly choreographed song can make all the difference between success and failure for a movie.

This has been proved time and again. You dont need to go back in time to figure this out. One of the biggest recent hits, Bunty aur Babli can be a case study. When the movie was released, not many knew about the item song by Aishwarya Rai in the movie. It was not even publicized. But as more and more people came to know about it, the movie started running to packed houses. And the rest in history... The song went on to become one of the biggest hits of 2005. The brilliant choreography could easily be credited for it. I dont think the movie would have done so well had it not been for the song.

Okies, I may not be the hip shaking types but definitely, when it comes to picking out the best choreographed dances in indian cinema, I do have a long list of favorites. I normally watch 'em whenever they are beamed on the television as I dont really like to go to theatres to watch candy floss movies (of the bunty babli, hum tum,kal ho na ho types...yikes)..

Over the years, there have been a few astonishing and brilliant dance sequences in our movies which have more or less become legends.. So I pick my favorite ten out of all these.. And one more thing, I dont wanna go back into yesteryears. To put it simply, I dont really like classical dances. Sorry about that.. I'm tryin to be as honest here as possible..tell me if you like 'em or not.. the best ones first..

1.Lakshya - Main aisa kyun hoon

When I saw this song for the first time, I had to rub my eyes to believe it was Hrithik Roshan and not an android.. Not that he is any bad when it comes to swinging his legs, infact he is one of the best dancers in bollywood today. But, this simply seemed outtazisworld!! Only then did I come to know that this song was choreographed by the original rubberman,himself..Prabhudeva. Tellin you, MAin aisa kyun hoon is one of the most spectacularly choreographed and brilliantly picturized songs. It has got a certain class and doesnt seem like the usual bollywood stuff. No one could have done it better than Hrithik..except maybe, for the original rubberman himself !! Full marks..

2.Pukar - Kay sera sera

This song had Madhuri grooving to the tunes of Prabhudeva against a red backdrop. The last of her dancing magics, this song was so beautifully choreographed and picturized that I couldnt resist from picking it up for the honours.Prabhudeva was in his usual form and did a great rubberneckin' job.. And as for Madhuri, all I can say is that it couldnt have been done better by any one else. She was simply looking gorgeous in a black outfit done with a charismatic smile on her face. What more can her fans ask for..

3.Beta - Dhak dhak

Whenever I think of this song, my jaw drops in awe. When this song was released, it hit a whole generation like a thunderbolt. Choreographed by Saroj Khan, this song was so brilliantly picturized that it still remains one of the best soft sensual song sequences of Indian cinema. They say, there is a very thin line between sensuality and vulgarity. And yet, this song never crossed that line into the wrong side. What more can I say, no one could have done it better. It is possibly one of the most difficult of the dances to choreograph but yet, Madhuri made it look so simple on the screen. The movie was trash, but this song made the theatres run to packed houses. The outfits and the ambience all seemed perfect. And even after a decade or more after its release, hardly any other similar song has the capability to match the sensuality of this song. What an irony, there is an overdose of skin show in cinema today but still not quiet capable of making your jaw drop like this one did!!

4.Yaraana - Mera Piya ghar aaya

Again one of Madhuri's best performances. This song was definitely a visual treat. Again the mentor here is Saroj khan. She is the one who made Madhuri famous in true terms.

This song was a stage performance like Ek do teen.. but nevertheless has more drool factor!! The movie is nondescript and many may even forget the name but yet this song will remain as one of the most memorable Madhuri numbers.

5.Mr. India - Kaate nahin kat te

This song from Mr. india has often been hailed by noted personalities as one of the most seductive numbers of bollywood. Quiet truly so..the brilliant choreography coupled with the ambience sets this song apart. This song can rightly be called the best rain song that bollywood is so fascinated with. There have been numerous songs of similar type after this but they were simply flashes in the pan, with no lasting value whatsoever..but this remains the best.

6.Koi Mil gaya - Kachcha nahin kuchh bhi

This is again one of my favorites. Hrithik roshan was again at his rubber best. He has a great athletic physique and it shows in his dances.. the performance was breathtaking and the ambience perfect. Great stuff..

7.Sailaab - Humko aajkal hai

Many of you may have not even heard of this movie, yeh, it wasnt good enough to be heard of..but this one item song from the movie was definitely worth all the eyes and ears. This song was again choreographed by Saroj khan and picturized on MAdhuri. And the result..watch it for yourselves... Sure the sets were tacky but you wouldnt have the time to look around as long as there is Madhuri grooving her stuff on the screen!!You simply wouldnt want to take your eyes off her!

8.Humse hai Muqabla - Muqabla Muqabla

One of the rubberman's first and the most original dance performance. This song was visually spectacular and was accompanied by foot thumping Rehman music. It went on to become one of the biggest hits of 95-96..

9.Bunty Aur Babli - Kajra re

Gosh...that was Ash at her dancing best...Though she has a big fan following,no one really imagined to see Ash in this way...she was simply too hot to handle!! I wonder what would have happened to the movie, had it been not for this song... It was the year's biggest hits. Though I absolutely hate it audibly(as it sounds like a typical paan wallah song to me..no offense towards anyone though..) I have to agree that Ash was looking awesome and the overall choreography was very good.

10.Dum - Jaan mein dum..

Okay, many of you wouldnt really want to see it in the numero uno list but I somehow feel that this song was picturized very well. It gives you an instant adrenaline rush. And the choreography was good too. Making Vivek Oberoi dance is a forte in itself.

This song will make you feel like a rebel..and that feeling is good!!

So that completes my top ten hipshakers list.. okay okay..now its time for the ''where is...'' and ''why didnt you include... '' kinda stuff...so what are you waiting for...comments...my friends..hehe..

Caayotee out.
