My personal list of the ten best movies that I watched in the year 2005 (in descending order)
1) Maatrabhoomi
Pros:
It’s a director’s project and one can just applaud this offbeat line adopted by Manish Jha. Great performances by all actors involved. Kudos toTulip Joshi **for this daring feat, which, undoubtedly is the best performance that I noted since Bandit Queen (Seema Biswas). Great star cast supported by Sushant Singh and Sudhir Pandey. Mercifully, there are no songs in this venture.
Cons: Could have been better received had it been promoted / marketed in a better way.
2) Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi
Pros: Sudhir Mishra’sspot on direction. For once nothing went wrong in this project. Stellar performances by the lead cast, great cinematography and a taut narration. For once, even the songs fitted in comfortable without jarring the pace of this project.
Cons: Nothing that I could note.
3) Sarkar
Pros: RGV’s homage to Godfather would be remembered for great performances. The father-son duo (Amitabh / Abhishek), Kay Kay Menon and a host of supporting cast successfully weave their magical spell on the audiences. Proves yet again, that models (read Katrina Kaif) aren’t that wooden after all.
Cons: The Govida chants proved irksome occasionally but thanks Bollywood for another songless venture.
4) Page 3
Pros: Great performances by almost everybody saved the day for the director. The direction (to me) was average and the one could see a looming shadow of yesteryear’s masterpiece called ‘Party’in almost every frame. But stupendous performances led by Ms. Sen, Atul Kulkarni, Boman Irani and the rest ensured that this film was extremely well received by the multiplex crowd.
Cons: Too pretentious in certain sections. Visibly pleased the journalists and therefore advocated (now so rampant on television channels) sensationalism.
5) Sehar
Pros: Great performances by Arshad Warsi, Pankaj Kapoor and Sushant Singh. Difficult to gauge the fact that it has been directed by a debutante. Way to go director.
Cons: Pathetic Mahima Choudhary (Yet again)
6) D
Pros: Great promotional campaign for Randeep Hooda. Again the stellar cast saved the director from being categorised in an average category. Not withstanding the RGV hangover, the project stands out because of unconventional cinematography and sound.
Cons: Average direction. Could have fared better with better editing and tighter narration.
7) Swades
Pros: Director Ashutosh knows how to narrate a story and it is evident in each frame. For once, Shahrukh Khan is tolerable and the lead actress is extremely beautiful.
Cons: Music though is soothing, is more of a hindrance and slows down the relentless pace that the director managed in the first half.
8) Dus
Pros: Style, Style and more Style. Abhishek Bachchan has arrived and how. Great cinematography and performances by all involved. Pulsating music by Vishal-Shekhar
Cons: Mediocre direction. Got tremendous support from his technical team. Any director could have come out with such results with such a solid technical (and monetary) backing.
9) No Entry
Pros: A laught riot, well directed by David Dhawan. Landmark situational comedy in recent times.
Cons: Music
10) Musafir *(Should be surprising for many)
Pros: Sanjay Dutt, Mahesh Manjrekar and landmark lounge music.
Cons: Pathetic screenplay, profanity and unnecessary skin show
Have'nt seen recent interesting releases like Apahran, white noise and Iqbal as yet.
