Firstly, I'd like to mention that a pc without games is like life without oxygen.

These games come in various genres and categories. The most popular of these are the action games because they are the best pick and play option in games.

Well these games are certainly not about just going on shooting whatever comes your way, there is a lot of thinking also to be done. And research proves that pc games help in improving concentration and sharpening the mind. Anyways, I must have a collection of about 50 odd action games.

Here's a list of the 10 best I have played.

1. FAR CRY

A whopping 5cd set, Far Cry takes full toll of your machines capability in terms of hard disk space and graphics engine. Lucky for me, my hdd is 120GB and i have a 128mb ram graphics card;). Anyways the game starts with you escorting a lady on a boat to an island when suddenly you are attacked. The next thing you find out that you get up in some sewer and from here on you start taking up the challenges that come your way.

The best thing about the game is the graphics, it almost feels that you are really crusading on an island. Even the range of weapons is very good. And you can drive around the island, go by foot, ride a motorboat and even paraglide on your way through the missions. The gameplay is also very indulging and will definitely make you go long thru the night till you finally complete the mission. A must play!

2. HALF LIFE(1&2)

Well well, the first game was a revolution in gaming. A game that set standards for others to follow, Half Life was just perfect, apart from the missions on Zen. The depth of gameplay, the thrill of puzzle solving and smashing the monsters was amazing.

The array of weaponry available at that time was also wonderful. Who can forget those irritating crabs coming out of nowhere to eat you up. The first one is a legend. However the second edition of HL came after a very long gap. Looked visually good.

Had a good storyline and a vast canvas but still there is nothing revolutionary in it. This is partly because other games have really done some amazing work over the years. But nothing to take away from HL2 it still is a masterpiece.

The game though looks going a long way, the way it ends I can visualise a lot more coming in the future. Gordon Freeman - the God of gamers.

3. GRAND THEFT AUTO

I got hooked to the GTA concept with GTA2 when it was a 2D game with a top view. But it was the concept that got me. Work for the local gangs and earn respect in town. But when GTA3 was announced in a 3D version I knew I had to won this one. Well I wasn't disappointed.

The game is packed in with the most open type gameplay. You are a jail prisoner being shifted from one prison to another when your van is attacked and you also manage to escape. A fellow criminal exposes you to a gang member for whom you can work on missions that grow with time. T

he more missions you complete the more popular you become and more people wanna work with you. When not on a mission you can just bash people on the road and steal their money, or steal a taxi and earn money on the taxi missions. The game is divided into 3 different areas, you start from one and get to explore the other two as you make progress in the game.

If this wasn't enough, there followed GTA: Vice City. The game was same in principle but had much more to offer. This time you could also ride bikes, helicopters. Even the missions had become more exciting and you could also buy out businesses. This is one bad guy I certainly wanna be.

4. HITMAN

You wake up from deep sleep. You are in a asylum where a voice tells you that you are created for one specific reason, to kill. Yes you are the hitman. A ruthless contract killer who works for the agency. You are a true specialist.

Superb gameplay, amazing concept and ultimate stealth gaming. Hitman just hits hardcore gamers with awe. The graphics are also awesome and the best part is sneaking on someone and knifing him even before he knows. You can kill someone, take his clothes and use disguises to complete missions.

Some gamers might find this game very tough, especially in missions where no weapons are allowed. The Hitman series followed up with 2 more games in the series. All 3 are a must play I must say!

5. SPLINTER CELL

You are operative Sam Fisher, who works on highly secretive and dangerous missions. Stealth is the name of you game. You work for a secret military organisation and fight against the growing world terrorism. Superb gameplay, wonderful graphics and really cool weapon options make this game feel really like you are on a secret misson.

The tension and excitement can actually be felt out there. The second game in the series was as exciting but I couldn't play it bacause it was not compatible with my graphic card. What a pity:(

6. MAFIA

Quite simply, Mafia has enthralled me like no other game has done. It's more like living in a movie. A game based in the 1930s it's a 20 mission long game. More than enough to make you love it. It's about a young taxi driver who gets introduced to the Mafia accidentally and has no choice but to stick to them.

It's got vintage cars, the weapons, friends and foes and a girlfriend too! And the game also has an option of openplay where you can just cruise around the city in a vintage car.

7. MAX PAYNE

The first game that introduced Bullet Time was a strong enough reason to play it. But thats not all, Max Payne is superb graphics and gameplay combined with a amazing storyline that you would love to live and would not also at the same time.

Max is a modern-day New York undercover cop whose wife and baby daughter were brutally murdered and who has since been framed for a crime. And revenge is the only way out now. Even the sequel to the game is equally exciting. Play it, enjoy the bullet time.

8. FREEDOM FIGHTERS

The soviet union have began the invasion of America. You are in a tight situation. You either surrender or choose to fight. Obviously, you fight, . Thats what you bought the game for:) It's upto you to lead up this revolution. You make based in the sewers beneath the city and operate in teams.

You gain respect with the missions you complete and the more people join your cause. Eventually you can have 12 rebels teaming up with you to fight the soviets. A lesser heard one, but a great game. Must have!

9. MEDAL OF HONOR

If it's war action you are looking at, Medal of Honor features on top of the list. I would say it is the best game to feature on the WW2. Superb graphics, real life weapons, amazing detail and out of the world gameplay.

You would truly feel like a soldier battling for your life and the country out there. The Ohama Beach fight and a deserted village full of sinpers are the high part of any action gaming thrill. Live the war, feel the tension! Even the sequel is worth a mention where the game takes you to the PACIFIC side of the WW2.

10. SWAT 3

Swat 3 is perhaps the best police action game I have encountered. It's ultra realistic and the gameplay is just amazing. The AI in the game is truly worth a mention. You take command of a SWAT team and lead them to various missions including tracking down a serial killer, a hostage situation and many such police moments.

Other Action games that need a mention are: Call of Duty, Soldier of Fortune, Painkiller, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Quake 3, Men of Valor, No One Lives Forever, Matrix
