I wasn't one to really get into the whole tax thing. But once you start raking in some moollah and your accountant/CA comes up with the word tax is when you start investigating and trying to find out all you can about this burden that all earning people (read: good citizens) have to carry - Tax.
A short search on the Internet brought me to the Mecca of tax sites - Taxindiaonline.com. A site that not only promised, but delivered. A constant visitor over a period of time and I was convinced that a membership (through my company) was worth spending for.
Tax is such a vast subject, but basically divided into Direct Taxes & Indirect Taxes. All of us, even though you might not be an Income Tax payee, are affected by Tax. The salt you buy has a component of tax built in, so if the company that is manufacturing this salt does not pay the tax you might not get the salt you so conveniently add to all your food.
Anyway the site is recognised by the Ministry of Finance and as all private sector enterprises, beats even the Government sites with issuance of the latest notifications & circulars issued by the various departments of the Ministry. Apart from that a simple analysis of the notification and its implications on business would render you firms Chartered Accountant or Legal/Tax consultant useless.
I liked the idea of getting online and at times talking to Tax experts and the editor himself on issues of International Trade, Customs, Excise, Service Tax, The whole CAS fiasco, and Corruption and Government Department inadequacies.
Most of all, the site also offers consulting, wherein, one can get help with tax related matters. Depending on the nature of the query Taxindiaonline.com might charge you for it or then give you an answer that will satisfy you completely.
The downside of the site is that for individuals it is out of reach to access all sections. No wonder the site has a list of clients that reads like the who-is-who of Indian Industry. Over the past couple of months I have seen that list grow at an alarming rate, so guess that the Industry is also appreciating the services that are being provided by the Website.
I think anyone who wants to know about taxation in India ought to visit the website. If you want to become a tax guru, devour it with fervour. Cheers to Taxindiaonline.com for making life simple for citizens and laying out information in a simple format, deciphering all those sections, subsections, paragraph references that are issued by the Government Departments in their Notifications.
