The past few years haven’t been good to Tata Motors in passenger car segment. Occasionally, they have introduced some good products but most of times they are not up to the mark. For me the introduction of new Zest does not go well either. Its petrol variant has 1.2- litre Turbocharged Reverton engine which provides the power of 90 bhp and a torque of 140 Nm while the diesel variant has 1.3-liter, it generates 90bhp and 200Nm of torque. Both the engines are very loud and noisy. Power delivery is not good.

Lot of things has been taken from dated Indigo CS. It looks identical from outside. New projector headlamp is a good introduction(only in top variant), front grill also inspired from the old CS. Indicators have been shifted to ORVMs from fender. The tail lamps are horizontal and wrap around the car corner. I dint like the design it could have been better. Overall, the outlook does not appeal to me.

Interior- the dash board and console looks similar to the Manza. Instrument panel is full of buttons looks very stuffed. I find it difficult to get used of them. New steering is small and it is mounted with audio, phone and voice control. Front seats are large and comfortable. Car has got ABS+EBD braking system but missing airbags which is a big mistake by Tata. The door handles have been left blank and therefore looked down market. There is no room for a 1- litre bottle anywhere in the car. Space in the back row is also not sufficient and a tall man always have problem while sitting inside. The roof of the car seems like very fragile and it appears that it will crack if you press it hard.

Riding and handling of the car is not much appreciated. Like other Tata car its steering still vibrates on a high speed. One can trust on its braking system. But the suspension system still needs a lot of improvement. Mileage is very poor around the city(11-12km/l). I thought that it could be a technical issue, hence I get it checked by Tata engineers but they could not found out the root cause of the problem. I have also confirmed with other Zest owners and they are also not pleased with its performance.

I don’t think Tata is a reliable name in passenger car segment. One could hardly find out Tata cars on roads. Getting spare parts and find out authorised service centre is a nightmare. In my city we do have sales outlet but no service centre available. Resale value of the car is also not pleasing.

TATA in spite of their various claims and promises have yet again failed to deliver a good car to the customers. Doubt it would do any better if launched in commercial either. Here is a sign of yet another venture of TATA which has only left customer like us crying for spending a fortune. I do not recommend this car.
