*UPDATE - 17 JAN 2008

I own the Safari 2.2 VTT for more than one year now**. The car has done around 17000 KM.

Most recently there is a drop in car pickup and service lamp is always glowing in the dashboard. The car has become non fun to drive. Gave car 2 times to authorized workshop, they experiment but are able to do nothing. Sent email to customer care, called the office at Delhi, but it all leads to nothing. I just went to team-BHP website and found similar experience with so many people.

The car since some last few months give a screeching belt noise whenever AC is switched on, and it lasts for sometime, the workshop people say ITS NORMAL. The Left front windshield many a times get stuck when it is rolled up, This again is a normal problem, and as it is often not reproducible at workshop. nothing is done about it.

TOO MANY PROBLEMS, PATHETIC SERVICE, JUST AVOIDABLE

HERE IS OLDER REVIEW

-

I was one of the first 2.2 VTT safari buyer in Delhi. The car has done about 9000 KM since then. Long trips include Delhi-Jaipur and Delhi-Dehradoon. The car has great road presence and feel. The space inside is excellent. Very powerful engine, the cabin noise is also very reduced. Problems are many with the car and the mechanics and support not just upto the mark. My left power window gets stuck occasionally and there is no cure for it. The plastics on the inside dont fit smoothly. You can see loose wires her and there in the car.

The car started giving me a problem, where the accelerator pedal was getting stuck occasionally while accelerating the car. I needed to approach the workshop many a times, leave the car for days, approach different workshops to finally figure out that it was a small adjustment issue with brake sensor. Then one day the carengine pulley broke down, got it fixed then something in engine broke down, now still there is some noise in right wheel when the car is cold in mornings. Wiper fluid bottle has started leaking and none of the workshops have it. PARTS NOT available. All the workshops are flooded with cars.

There are just so many problems with tata cars. Getting a simple thing fixed in your car is a big pain. Workshop people are so used to talking with drivers and cabbies that they can hardly talk decently to you or understand the value of time for the car owners. Mailing to any of the email id mentioned returns no response. Bad feedback results in no improvement. I own Zen for 10 years and it did not give me as many problems as Safari has given me in less than 10 months. I owned fiat petra previously for 3 years and never needed to go to workshop besides the servicing. Overall tata engineering remains shabby. I am making the comment being an engineer myself.

Riding the car is fun, its like riding a big powerful bull. Even though its an LX model with NO middle roof AC, the cabin cools comfortably in few mins, so no need felt for roof AC. I have found the braking to be adequate.

Regarding the dealer experience, the car was already slightly scratched when I got it, but I accepted as I was already fedup of the dealer and small scratches become part of any Delhi car very soon. The car had already done about 400KM when I got it. Most of the tata dealers use new cars for test drives.
