The idiot box is now a religion. There have been many instances of false bravado when I would have resolved not to switch it on - those would have lasted a maximum of 8 hours!
When it is a lifeline, you would expect to receive the best and all of what is available in the airways. For all my life I remember being at the mercy of the local cable operator for either getting some channels on air or even getting good quality reception. If you happen to be an urban nomad, then every year or 2 you end up meeting new faces of this local mafia!
In December 07 we finally decided to get on board the DTH way and opted for Tata Sky . The reception clarity is good and the service quality has been amazing so far. My most recent experience was the instant access to channels when I added the package to my account. The speed was amazing. I am also impressed with the telephonic recharge of account which enables you to get near instant access. Their Active Whizkids package is good but has scope for improvement too. I have not had the time to explore their games section.
We have had 1 instance of using the help of the technical team and while their SLA was 24 hours, it was attended and resolved within 2 hours from the time of placing the complaint.
There are some areas of concern - some channels are just not available for e.g. Zee Marathi Talkies is elusive. Nor is there an option to choose select channels and add it to your package. The new snazzy ones get packaged into expensive packages and you are forced to shell out for a bunch which you will never ever get to watch.
So all in all better than the horrid local cable chaps who make you squirm and subject you to torture - mental and monetary. But it is not free from its set of hassles as well. So weigh your options and preferences and take the plunge.
