Overview

Amidst several brands, Tata Motors India has shined with its new product Nexon, at the Delhi Auto Expo 2016. Earlier, the concept of this model was showcased during the 2014 Auto Expo. The vehicle carries most of the exterior design characteristics of the concept, yet slight changes can be noticed in the front, in the form of revamped bumper and new set of headlamps. Other highlights on the outside include the matte black roof, turn indicators to door mirrors as well as protruding roof spoiler in the rear. Only a few images of its interiors could be seen during the event. However, based on a few spy shots from the past, we can say that it will have a three spoke steering wheel, touchscreen infotainment system and automatic climate control features, probably in the top end variants. As for the safety, we can expect it to integrate some of the key elements like seat belts for all passengers, anti lock braking system, engine immobilizer and few other such attributes. Besides these, it is reported to come with both petrol and diesel engine options. As per the sources, it may feature a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine that is likely to generate 89bhp power along with torque of 140Nm. Meanwhile, it might be offered with a new 1.5-litre diesel motor that is said to be developed under the Revotorq family. This mill might make a peak power of 108bhp besides yielding torque of 260Nm. We are anticipating this mean machine to come with a price tag ranging between Rs. 6 to Rs. 11 lakhs and will compete with the likes of Mahindra TUV300, Ford Ecosport, and the upcoming Maruti Vitara Brezza in this segment.

Exterior

Said to be based on the Tata's next generation “Impact design” philosophy, the Nexon does look different and stylish compared to other models from this stable. This production ready version is very close to the original concept that was displayed in 2014 during the Delhi Motor Show.Nexon is reported to come with a total length of around 3990mm, which is slightly less compared to its competitors, but good enough to provide ample space to the passengers inside. Its ground clearance dimension is revealed, which is 200mm. This measurement equals with the Ecosport, but 16mm greater than the TUV 300. This machine will definitely impress the car aficionados, who have a special interest for utility vehicles. It is designed as an SUV, but is compact and miniature in size. One look at it, will give you an impression of a hatchback because of its small appearance.Talking about its front facade, we can see a huge, perforated radiator grille with a thick chrome strip. The company's logo sits at the center of this grille thus, emphasizing its looks further.

On the either sides, it has two large and well designed headlight clusters. These are likely to have projector headlamps and turn indicators. Also, we can notice daytime running lights in its images, which will further add to its style.

The bumper looks wide and well sculpted. This houses a wide air intake, while the top of the range trims may also feature a couple of fog lamps on its either sides.Performance

As of now, we have only little information about its technicalities. If reports are to be believed, it may be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options to select from.

Petrol

This compact SUV is likely to get 1.2-litre Revotron petrol drive train, which is the same motor powering the Tata Zest. It might make a maximum power of about 89bhp and deliver torque output of 140Nm. This may come paired with a five speed manual transmission gearbox that will help to provide better gear shifts. On the other hand, we are also expecting the manufacturer to offer the AMT option for the petrol version. However, it is still a rumor and we will update you once the actual details are out.

Diesel

Prior to its unveil, there were rumors that this compact SUV will be powered by a 1.3-litre Fiat sourced MultiJet diesel motor. But it is now reported to feature a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is likely to be mated with a six speed manual transmission gear box. This may churn out a peak power of 108bhp in combination with torque of 260Nm.

Ride and Handling

The automaker may offer this machine with a dual path suspension system that will make the drive comfortable on uneven roads as well. It might also be accompanied with coil springs that will further make the ride free from jerks. Nothing has been revealed yet about the braking system, but it is likely to get anti lock braking system, which may take the braking performance to the next level. On the other hand, it might come with an electric power assisted steering setup that will help in handling the vehicle irrespective of bad road conditions. We can expect it to have tilt adjustment function as well.

Safety

This latest model from Tata may integrate vital security aspects for passenger safety. We can expect tight seat belts for all the passengers, while dual front airbags might also be on the offer to shield them from injuries. Alike other models, this one too might come with a robust body structure incorporated with collision absorption elements, and impact protection beams, which will ensure maximum security. More advanced aspects might also be offered such as the anti lock braking system along with electronic brake-force distribution, and traction control as well. Besides these, central locking system, engine immobilizer, and rear defogger are also expected.

Variants

Presently, no information has been provided regarding the total number of variants this model will be offered in.

Verdict

Lately, Tata Motors has been trying to offer the best in its vehicles, which is quite evident in the Zest model. This one in particular, is good in terms of looks, engine performance and features as well. Considering this, it would be safe for us to expect its upcoming products as well, to have similar or even better aspects. As for the recently unveiled Nexon, it is already being rumored to share the X1 platform, which are used in the Zest sedan and Bolt hatchback. So here, it leaves us with a thought that, it might also carry some of the innovative elements that are present in the above mentioned vehicles. If this turns out to be true then, you can definitely consider Tata Nexon, which might leave you impressed with its bold looks and superior features.
