Say Na and No to NANO.

Nano has some gud points. The space inside is better than Alto I feel. It is easy to get up and out. The look is kinda funky and that's cool.

But seriously consider the following before buying a NANO:

  • The build quality is very bad and after one monsoon the car becomes very noisy with kich kach noise coming from various places.

  • The Tata service centres are always very crowded and no one cares about a Nano. I have seen them paying more attention to Fiat cars these days.

  • The fuel efficiency in city is about 15-16 kmpl and not 23 kmpl as claimed.

  • The engine is noisy, handling is very poor and ride is bumpy and uncomfortable in the rear seats.

  • The engine is placed right below the rear seat and that is not at all comfortable.

  • There is no hatch to open at the rear and so access to the tiny boot space is by folding the rear seat. It is very inconvenient. At one shopping mall, I had to get out of the car and lift the rear seat for the security persons to check. In any other car it can be opened from the driver's seat itself.

  • The airconditioning is poor and you cannot expect much from a 624 cc twin cylinder engine.

  • It is strictly a city or small town car - you cannot go for long drives.

  • The fuel tank holds only 15 litres and frequent going to the pumps makes you to spend more money and waste more time.

  • The wheels are very small and so gives you the jitters on every pothole.

  • The car is so light that you feel nervous when a lorry whizzes past you.

  • Some of my friends have faced problems on waterlogged streets, since the engine is mounted very low at the rear.

  • The price is not at all 1 lakh, I paid over 2 lakhs for the car. At this price it is not at all a value-for-money car.

Alto is certainly a better car, but comes for around Rs. 1 lakh more. Only those with stringent budgetary constraints and limited usage for a car should go for a Nano.
