Tata Indicom is operational in 6 states at present and planning to be present in another 11 states by end of Dec 04, totalling to 17 states. They have touched the subscriber base of 2 million by the end of Jun 04 in mere 6 circles. As per their sources, they are #1 in the circles present as far as the bookings for the month of Jun is concerned. This shows the growing interest in the public about the product and the service.
Tata Indicom is expanding rapidly and would like to be present in over 1000 towns by Mar 05. In the last 3-4 months network is expanded 3-4 folds in the operational circles. Thus coverage issues are being well addressed. There are some concerns about the billing and the service. For that matter every service provider is having it. The very old operator also having issues. However they are being ironed out.
Tata Indicom (TATAs) plays safe and healthy game in the market. They do not play any tricks in the business nor make any false promises to the public, which affects their brand name. They do not go for cheap popularity. Their plans are always governed by the regulations set by the Government. Examples … SMS and Roaming services have been implemented only after getting the clearance from the Govt. Public have realised it, yet late, and the sales for the month of Jun 04 shows the growing interest in the public against other competitors. They leave the decision to the public whether to opt or not to.
Tariffs are simple & straight forward. No strings attached to it. No hidden costs. Once you take a mobile connection, if you wish to surrender, you can easily surrender it by paying the differential amount, if necessary. Where as in Reliance it is not so easy. Lot of strings are attached to it. So also in the pulse ratings, billing etc.
For corporate customers, Tata Indicom is the best service provider as all services are available under one umbrella. You may refer 'Voice and Data' magazine, Jun 04 edition for more details. If one likes to have data connectivity through mobile / FWT, then CDMA is the best choice as it can handle more than 2 Mbps data rate. Tata Indicom is also expanding their network in this front. I understand they are planning to launch pre-paid services and Push to Talk phones soon in the market. Tata Indicom plays slow and steady game as far as business is concerned, but goes aggressively in terms of network expansion and other allied services are concerned.
As per one of HR person of Tata Indicom, one interviewee said ''Working in Reliance is like playing American Football, where as working in Tatas is like playing Chess''.
