Opted for a Tata Docomo wire-line broadband connection without realizing that bad experiences were waiting for me! I came to know about Tata Docomo offering wire-line based broadband connections in limited parts of Trivandrum city. I decided to experiment with the connection since I was having a bad time with Reliance wire-line broadband.


The sales man who came with the application form( about two months ago) was highly enthusiastic about providing me the connection. I asked for the 1 Mbps FUP Plan 256 10GB @ 549/- per month. The sales person agreed to offer the plan; however, he wanted to inquire whether they are providing the plan then to the new customers.


This person called someone( right in front of me) to inquire about the availability of the plan. It is here where things get somewhat interesting. The other person( presumably the boss) seemed to have no idea about such a plan. The sales person went on explaining about the plan to his boss for about 10 to 15 minutes. Needless to state; but, I was highly amused by what was happening!


A couple of days after I had submitted the CAF, some people came and installed the wiring for the connection in my home. They stated that someone else will come and install the modem after giving me my username and password. It took nearly two weeks before that representative of the company showed up at my place. In the meantime, I had to make a few phone calls to some senior officials so that they can speed up this process.


Oh, and by the way, Tata Docomo does not offer any modem with their ADSL broadband connections. We need to supply the modem on our own. When inquired, the engineer told me that Tata Docomo is just an internet service provider. I wonder what he called the other ISPs in India like Airtel, Reliance and BSNL! The incoming link light was not present when the engineer installed the modem. In other words, I could not use the connection immediately. It took them more than 12 hours to fix this issue.


The username and password offered to me was not working either. Once again, I had to wait for them to fix it.


The response to service requests takes days. In my experience, it can take at least three to five days for the engineers to fix any kinds of connectivity issues. Moreover, the local exchange does not have any battery backups. If the power goes out in that area, Tata Docomo is down!


The customer care officials will try to mess up with the settings that are present in your modem. When we call them to report that the connection is not working, they will ask us to change the settings of the modem.


There will be no internet connectivity during the public holidays. It appears that the engineers shut down the local DSLAM and the associated machinery so that they can go home peacefully to relax with their family. Diwali season is fast approaching and I expect my connection to go down during then too.


My connection was down during the entire week during the Onam holidays. When I inquired, they said the same excuse - Onam holidays - so delay in fixing the connection. The tone used by the engineer was as if he is doing a great favor on me by fixing the connection after the holidays! It can really get into the nerves of the short-tempered ones like me.:(


The engineers are very careful to call us only from telephone numbers that do not accept incoming calls. Perhaps, they like to keep themselves at a distance from the customers.


As of now, I am using this connection as my secondary ISP. In the due course of time, I will discard it. For the record, my account number is 947028797.
