I have been using the broadband dsl service from Tata Indicom (previously this co was Dishnet but it got taken over by the Tatas) since May,2004. I paid around Rs 8000 for the connection.They gave me a usb adsl modem (which is very small as compared to big Bsnl Dias modem) and connected a cable to it. The speed at which I connect is 512 kbps which is by far the fastest I have used until now.
I did a full research on all the other 24 hrs internet service providers and only then decided to go for this.Broadband is internet speed above 256 kbps.Bsnl dias and Hotwire in calcutta offer 128 kbps speed which is not broadband.
My friends who use Bsnl and Hotwire were aghast at the internet speed including the download speed I received from tata Indicom broadband. I am registered for the 501 plan which allows me 410 Mb Data upload and download pm @ Rs 1050 pm. However if you visit their web site https://vsnl.ddsl.net/ now you will see them offering 500 Mb @ Rs 875 pm.
So I am going to change my plan to this.I initially faced a lot of service problems because I took the connection when Dishnet was taken over by the Tatas and so there was lot of chaos in their office about power sharing and all.
However now their service works fine and I think if you use the internet a lot this is a must.I only wish they would increase the data upload download limit.You are charged extra for downloading or uploading data beyond your limit.
Currently I am charged Rs 1.5 per Mb for data transfer beyond 410 Mb pm.However just check the time based plans on their web site as they offer no limit on download and upload of data but a limit on time available to you for using the Internet.Now my Internet is on 24 x 7 at the fastest speed available.
Ps: This is my first review on Mouthshut and I just registered on it today.I hope it is useful to you people.Also I am located in Calcutta and so I can only talk about the Isp's located here.Among them no doubt Tata Indicom is the best right now.
Hey ppl also note that broadband connection with windows xp proved lethal for me. Blaster worms and many more kept attacking and screwing up my comp. I have since switched to windows 2000 which I'm finding very safe nd stable.:)
