Hi,

Well I have been looking for a new car for my use in the city. I have driven the following cars Santro, Indica (P), Zen, Palio All of these are petrol engines. Now I will tell you what I feel about these cars

Indica LSi

Santro Xing XE

Palio 1.2 Elx

Mileage 10-12          12+
        10-8(Real Bad)

Note: All most all cars in city traffic give about 10kmpl. A Santro on the highway may give 17, Indica 15, Palio 12-14

2) Comfort

Indica

An Indica Here has the smoothest and is equal to a palio, but I feel the palio is a little bit better. The Indica has the standard front suspension i.e. McPherson struts, and the Special part is Rear suspension it is semi independent which gives it that smooth ride. I felt that the seat was a bit high, it gave me the feeling of driving a safari some people may like it but I personally dislike it. Comon people it’s a small car not a truck. I do like the comfort it gives. It is really spacious in the back actually a lil bigger than the palio and way larger than a Santro. Overall a very spacious car with palio only competes on this level.

Santro

This can has that nice toy car feel which makes it fun to drive; I like the ease of driving the most. It may be a little crampt inside but it fits an average family of 4 pretty comfy. I do however like its ease to drive, it is cramt in the back, and this variant though it lacked powersterin was not so hard to drive until it comes to parking.

Palio

This is my fav to drive, it is the most comfy. It takes a while to get used to it, I have been driving SUV's Since I was twelve and trust me this car would be a bit hard for a beginner to drive since it has a real bad view and feels like it is really wide. The Gear shift is a bit of pain, but I liked it, I like the seating position the most, Even if you have to sit forward when you need to park. Also I noticed while getting in and out of the car, the doors tend to irritate since they open at a smaller angle

3) Interiors

Indica

An Indica has pretty okay interiors for it price. It comes with a nice console, which I find totally Impractical, It looks like the gauges have grown out of the dash, everything is easy to reach for, but it is kind of dull. I like its looks personally but remember beauty lies in the beholder. Now as far as function n features, I feel the Indica pulls the best value for money here. It comes with Ac, Power steering. Plus the usual junk.

Santro

Now this car really disappointed me here, it personally looked crap inside. It is the same as the old Santro with a remote fuel and boot release that is it. It Had no Power Steering. Nothing at all. It had an ac n that is it. No Body coloured bumpers or anything. It was not worth it as far as interiors are considered

Palio

Italian company, Italian style. This car has the classiest interiors of them all. The Best looker to :-). This car has the best of the best. It has a real nice centre console with an ac and powersteerin and power windows... central locking ... Name it, it has it. It is a Beauty inside. I must say we have a winner here.

Drive n Ride Quality

Indica

This has a nice ride, smooth and stable at high speeds. It has a real sporty engine and 1400cc Engine is a mean machine. There is no substitute for that 75bhp. Nothing at all this is a performer. Its steering is stiff and gives you a nice feeling. It is extremely stable. And can push up to 140 to 150 kms. Guess. It has a nice road hugging feel n the brakes are good. For long distances it is comfy for 5 and has good ride quality.

Santro

Hyundai disappointed me here. I did not like the tall feel of the Santro and it always made me feel unstable but trust me on this, If you got pretty decent control you can hold a sharp turn at about 120 - 135kms. And yes you could pull a handbrake turn off at 30kms. It is stable but feels unstable to most of us. (All the above stuff has been done by me on a Santro 2000 model) I guess the Xing should hold true to it older model. Now brakes are a pain here well not really, I am fanatical about brakes. It tends to lock a lot so be careful and pump your brakes. Now it is really not that comfy as a palio or an Indica for long distances. But is real nice to drive in the city. The Xing I drove felt a bit underpowered at low rpms I mean it has a low torque. This means you need to change gears often. But once revs are up it’s an easy drive. Now as far as acceleration it is good enough but no where near an Indica or palio. It has a nice purr but. It sounds amazing.

Palio

This has a smooth n quiet ride. I mean no engine sounds at all. The quietest cabin of all. I love the way it glides over the road and is more of a highway car. It is big n hard to drive in the city, well not that hard but comparatively harder. I am used to big cars so it was fun for me to drive it. I felt like I was driving my safari again. A trick is to sit back so that you get a wider view. ;-). Now here is my fun part. This car accelerates amazingly once the revs are up, but it is fast but not as fast as an Indica with more power and less weight. Once moving it keeps moving and out does a Santro and creeps up behind an Indica. It handles great. But jus remember if you loose control of this car, you will need to be a pro to bring it back. I Learnt The hard way. It is heavy so when it loses you need raw skill and nerves of steel to bring this beast back to control.

Conclusion

For My budget the palio is out of reach and its mileage kills it, but if you don’t care about money and mileage all you want is a good looker then palio wins. The Santro is a good city car, for us average people who like to drive sensibly and carefully under the 100km mark. This car is in my view not worth it (will mention details below). The Indica is a beauty with raw power, nice handling but it has bad name TATA. These guys build trucks and they are just beginning to refine themselves.

Now here is my story:

I went to buy a Xing Xe, it comes with nothing but an ac for the same price of an Indica I get ac, power steering, body coloured bumpers plus a load of goodies tata is offering. I mean an Indica is such a better buy. Well the choice is yours so here are the links to the cars specification pages
