Tuesday 28th Aug'07: (This is the review I posted on 28th night)
I went to buy a Diamond Pendant & Earrings set at tansihq today @ South Extension-I, New Delhi Show room. We were assured by the sales person, that we can choose either the pendant or the earrings and he would be able to help us get the matching pair of Pendant / earrings, as the case might be.
After spending about 30 minutes we selected a pendant priced at about Rs. 14, 000/-. The sales guy showed us earrings, which as per him were matching, but didn't seem to have an iota of relation with the selected Pendant. He then checked his computer terminal and told us that he can get the matching earrings made to order from their factory.
He also assured us that they are Tanishq and have templates for each design code. The earrings would look identical to pendant in shape & design but be smaller in size by 30-40%. Of course he could not show us a picture of the same. Believing in the Tata brand, we decided to go ahead. I asked him the total price and he said it would come to around 28, 000. The earrings shall get delivered in 2-3 weeks.
I agreed, paid him by credit card, Rs. 13, 900/- for pendant (Full payment) and 5000/- (Advance) for earrings. Then my wife just happened to glance at the order sheet for earrings and it said the price is Rs. 29, 000/- for earrings alone. We protested and he said that he had given a price of 29, 000 for only earrings and not combimned price for pendant + Earrings. I asked him, if the earrings pair is exactly identical in shape, design & materials and 30-40% smaller in size than the pendant, then how come it is more expensive than the pendant itself?
He refused to answer the question and on repeating the question, he did not let me complete my question and gave some Story about diamonds vary in cost as they are natural stones. and continued stonewalling my question. I had to scream to get heard and I asked for the manager to speak to me. As I tried to speak to the manager the sales rep standing besides me kept on smiling.
I found the manager also to be completely ill equipped to handle an irate & shouting customer. Thankfully I got him to punch in refund entry in the credit card machine and managed not to get conned by the mosted trusted brand name in India, that of TATA. I am just saying TATA to TATA brand and of course to Tanshiq for looting and conning the customers.
What happened after I posted the review:
Wednesday 29th Aug’07 10 AM: I sent an email on an email address I found on the Tanishq website, asking them to read my review on mouthshut.com
Wednesday 29th Aug’07 4 PM: I got a call from Mr. Vidyasagar of Tanishq, wanting to speak to me. I was busy and told him to call at 6 PM. He called up at 6 PM and listened patiently to me on the phone.
He also said that after reading the mouthshut.com review, they have done a complete investigation, identified the sales person, the products which I was buying and the issue in terms of pricing. Apparently the ear rings had bigger sized diamonds than the pendant and hence the higher price, which the sales person was not aware of. He was extremely apologetic and requested me to come to the same show room, with my wife, at least once again and he would be there at a time convenient to him.
His telephonic chat was good enough, for me to agree, but I was not sure of my wife. I did manage to convince her to come along with me.
Thursday 30th Aug’07: Mr. Vidyasagar again called up to check on our visiting their showroom and I confirmed for 7 PM on Saturday.
Saturday 1st Sep’07: We reached the showroom at 7 PM. A gentlemen was already standing near the entrance, waiting for us, along with Mr. Vidyasagar. Mr. Vidyasagr, patiently listened and had a very polite and reassuring conversation with us. Took us around the three floors of the showroom. He also explained the systems & processes they have put into place, to provide extra disclosures in their invoices, than what is the normal practice, and of being transparent with the customers. He checked with my wife, if she would like to buy something.
Finally she landed up buying Rs. 43, 000/- worth of diamond jewellery against our earlier plan of around Rs. 30, 000/-. As soon as we stepped out of the showroom door, one of the pretty ladies came running out with a bouquet of flowers to wish my wife on her birthday which was on 2nd Sep. This was followed by another pretty lady coming out and handing a gift wrapped birthday present for her.
Oh my God. We were zapped by our experience of this visit again lasting for about 90 minutes. Probably my wife will never go to any other Jewellery shop in future. Tanishq is what it would be for her!
Mr. Vidyasagar not only restored our faith in the Tanishq & TATA brand, but converted us into life long customers of theirs. Who says TATA cannot be a No. 1 global brand in the years to come?
