Tangier, a Moroccan city located in the north of the country on the coast, has opened its arms to all visitors. The people of the city are proud of its location ? between Africa and Europe. So close is the city to Europe that when the weather is clear, Spain is visible.

The first place that visitors should go in the city is the local market. It includes everything needed for daily life as well as goldsmiths, spice merchants and coppersmiths. There?s also an area known as Al-Qasaba which is full of old traditional houses. Other old neighborhoods include Dar Al-Barood, Jinan Fabtan, Wad Ahrdan, Bani Yadr and Qasaba Ghelan.

In another area, there is Dar Al-Makhzan which was built in the 18th century. In 1938, it was transformed into a museum. Near the local market is a big mosque, which became a church during the Portuguese era but which is now once again a mosque. One of the most beautiful buildings is the former American embassy which was a gift to the Americans by Sultan Moulay Sulaiman I. Today it is a museum with a rich collection of books.

Tangier is known as the city of two seas because it touches the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Many outstanding restaurants and cafés are located on the beach. There are also a number of natural features such as the Cave of Hercules which was carved by the movements of the ocean waves. South of the city, visitors can see women in traditional scarves selling cheese, milk and other local products.

Tangier is considered a city of joy and pleasure. Weddings take place throughout the year and are considered a woman?s party. Brides are transported in a specially-designed howdah which signifies the movement from past to present.
