Story of a woman who helps a confused man recognize his true self.

This is a poorly executed product of Imtiaz Ali whose last venture ‘Highway’ received mixed response at the Box Office.

Story: Ved(Ranbir Kapoor) from childhood loves listening to stories and even pays to listen to inspiring stories.  Tara(Deepika Padukone) dreams to visit Corsica ever since she read the comic book ‘Asterix in Corsica’.

She meets Ved who happens to be vacationing in Corsica. Both decide not to reveal their true identities and lie to each other as long as they are in Corsica and make an agreement never to see each other ever again. So whatever they did, ended in Corsica. Once in India they are back to their routine lives. Four years pass by and Tara happens to see Ved in Delhi.

She is tempted to meet Ved and thus breaks the agreement. Their love blossoms and Ved proposes to Tara. It then dawns to Tara that the Ved she knew in Corsica is not the same now. In Corsica he was Teja/Don/Interpol officer and she was Mona Darling. Now he is a Product Manager of a reputed Company and she is a businesswoman. She decides not to accept the proposal and to leave Ved. Heartbroken, Ved is unable to perform at work and loses his job. He struggles to find his true self. Tara regrets her decision and meets Ved to reconcile and accept his proposal. Her pep talk helps him realize his true identity and he is filled with gratefulness. He is now a changed man who came out of his robotic lifestyle.

Lousy Script: The script may be interesting to the characters played by Ved and Tara but to the audience it is a nightmare. The characters are moronic, not relatable and the drama too stressful to comprehend. Ved and Tara’s off and on romance is not only superficial but their act will drain you to the point wherein you would wish to leave half way. The narrative is boring enough to put you to sleep. There is no logic to their romance whether in Corsica or in India. In the end Ved redeeming himself from his old lifestyle does not impress the viewer nor does it compensate the time and money spent.

Cast Performance: 90 percent of the script revolves around the characters of Ved and Tara. Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have evolved as great actors but their performance in ‘Tamasha’ does not come across as outstanding or extraordinary. They were just themselves, rather you have seen them perform much better in the past. The performance of the supporting cast was satisfactory.

Direction: Imtiaz Ali is a fine Director cum Writer but may find himself in murky waters this time. If ‘Tamasha’ fails at the Box Office, it will be solely attributed to the script. His direction appeared rusty lacking die hard determination to excel or succeed. It was just an ordinary attempt trying to cash in on his brand name and past success. The cinematography came across good only due to the scenic locales of Shimla and Corsica.

Songs: Music is given by A. R. Rahman and lyrics by Irshad Kamil(Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo).  Due to the shoddy script, none of the songs complemented nor added value to the film. They were inserted as is customary in a Bollywood movie.

Conclusion: ‘Tamasha’ is an uninspiring product with bad script and unimpressive execution. The viewer may find the screenplay boring and exhausting.  This may turn out to be another ‘Roy’ or ‘Bombay Velvet’ for Ranbir Kapoor. The movie does not offer anything interesting in the name of entertainment except a lesson on finding your true identity from a boring professor.  I suggest not to waste your time and money on this one and to give it a skip.
