From a silly teenager dancing on roads to playing a mother to two teenagers. From VIJAY PATH to NAME SAKE . If there is any actress who has truly evolved with every film that came her way. it is TABU.
TABU started off with some commonplace [read it as mediocre ] stuff like Pehla pehla pyar, Vijaypath, Saajan ki baahon mein, and was content. Come 1996, Tabu's career was going downhill. She had a few other commonplace [you know what to read it as ] films pending.
When she got an offer to do a small role in ABCL's venture with PRIYADARSHAN for a small scale film - KAALA PANI. She happily accepted it as yet another cameo. But when the movie released, the audience was left stunned when they realised the impact TABU could make even with a minuscule role. Even TABU couldn’t' believe her capability. Though she did commercial equally well later on, she had realised by now SERIOUS CINEMA was her forte. In 1997, came VIRASAT , exploiting her acting skills to a tee. MAACHIS got her a national award meanwhile. VIRASAT got her a FILMFARE later.
Then she hit the commercial success with CHACHI 420 and there she was, on a roll. Then, TABU has been delivering one mind-boggling performance every year. When 2003 went quite low for her, she made up for it with MAQBOOL and how. The same was the case in 2005, when she didn't do many films, but came up with NAME SAKE [for N.R.I viewers] and FANAAH. Her guest appearances in SAATHIYA, SILSILAY and FANAAH had put those to shame who keep complain for bigger roles to perform better.
Really, the natural aura with which she weeps on Screen is too good. Maybe she is too Tall for her co-stars, maybe she can't dance as good as AISHWARYA or MADHURI, may be she doesn't have any YASH RAJ film in hand, but when it comes to real acting, TABU can teach a lesson to all the others or two. Infact , Taboo is no competition to others. She is just a class apart. She doesn’t care for AWARDS, but still fetches them in plenty.
RANI MUKHERJI may be a great actress, but if there is anyone she needs to look up to in order to reach the zenith of excellence, it’s TABU.
May be, it’s because of SHABANA AZMI, her aunt, an equally enthralling artiste. Who has passed her the acting bug, which seems as natural to TABU AS? Breathing. As a piece of trivia, JOHHNY DEPP wanted to work with her after watching her act in NAME SAKE. Apparently, SRK after watching CHANDNI BAR said good-humouredly that he would never work with TABU for the fear of getting a strong inferiority complex in the process. That is the testimony to TABU's prowess.
And for the sceptics, CHEENI KUM will be hitting your nearest screens before you can say "TABU is gone", while NAME SAKE is there for you already.
Cheers Harsh
