This here is the all-new Apache RTR 200 and before you

ask, no, it is not based on the BMW G 310 R. The second-

generation Apache is an in-house effort by TVS and will be

pitched against the Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS.

The Apache 200 is a handsome-looking brute that'll grab

attention. It takes certain design cues from the Draken

concept( showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo), but TVS has

managed to keep the styling minimal yet attractive.

The 197.7cc single-cylinder fuel-injected motor makes

20.7bhp and 18.1Nm of torque. It gets a much-needed fifth

cog, too.

Plenty of power is available from 4, 000rpm onwards. It is

spread evenly through the rev range, which is good for fuel

efficiency but not so much for the fun factor. Most riders

will appreciate this nice spread of power especially while

overtaking.

In the city, the Apache feels light on its feet. The tight

turning radius coupled with the upright riding position

means the Apache can weave through traffic with ease.

What has always impressed us about the older Apache is its

mix of practicality and fun. And the RTR 200 follows the

same tried and tested formula.

The RTR 200 we sampled came with soft compound Pirelli

rubber. Needless to say, the tyres provide that extra

confidence to push the RTR harder into a corner. Is it a

corner-carver? No, it isn't. But show it a winding road and

the bike will put a smile on your face. It doesn't feel

unsettled at any speed, but beyond 100kph, the ride turns

choppy.

The RTR 200 comes with petal discs front and back. The

bike we rode did not have dual-channel ABS, but it will be

offered on other variants for around Rs 8, 000 more. The

discs do a good job of stopping the bike. Initially, we found

the brakes a bit soft for our liking, but once we were used to

them, they were fine.

Though the Apache RTR 200 leans more towards the

practical side of things, it still manages to provide a

shedload of fun.

The numbers

197.7cc, 1cyl, 20.7bhp, 18.1Nm, 5M, 148.5kg wet, Rs 1.07

lakh( FI with Pirellis, approx, ex-showroom, Delhi)

The verdict

Potent motor, able handling and tremendous grip from the

Pirellis all wrapped in an attractive-looking package.
