Laugh riots- 10 TV shows with the most idiosyncratic nut case characters ever!!!
Sitcoms have always made us laugh our way through our lives… we don’t seem to mind the re-re-re-re-runs (ya, the n-th time too) when we’re chilling out, killing time! But these characters, all painstakingly well developed, are the ones who have touched our emotional chords and will always make us smile (& surely laugh too!).
(I) A supa-rich dysfunctional family- whose family assets get frozen as the father is arrested for some queer accounting practices. Everyone panics—pushing every single one to the edges and re-fining and ‘adding character’ to their severely twisted eccentricity! "ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT". A strange strange world of lunatics!
(II) Grace is a radiant full of life interior designer who dated Will in college and got dumped when he “came out” with being gay. After getting over her heartbreak both became best of friends & eventually roommates. Jack (quite a character! And is gay too) had helped Will “come out”- He gabbles utter gibberish in a neck breaking speed (quite entertaining!) - A loser in life who a child at heart (& brains too) flits between all kinds of jobs (actor, own show, nurse and god knows what all) gets along like gasoline on fire with Karen. Karen – the peculiar character one can come across on TV- is drugged/ drunk perpetually at all times. Extremely mega-mega- rich (she has earned quite a sum through her ‘n’ no of marriages) with philosophies that probably no one will ever be able to relate to! She has quite a r’ship with her maid Rosario. Ah! The 5 of them make quite a watch! That’s "WILL & GRACE" for you…!
(III) 4 friends again. 3 men 1 woman. Seinfeld, George, Kramer, Elaine. All extremely shallow, insane, selfish, with the quirkiest ideologies & thought processes. Almost have never been in long term r’ships. They actually can lie, pretend, bluff around, step over people, and dump people to satiate their irrelevant unintelligent desires in life!!! That’s "SIENFELD" !!!
(IV) An office setup. With a super rich businessman running a glamour magazine names Blush. His daughter- who believes in “inner beauty” and would sincerely wants to write on serious important issues thriving in the world- but mounting bills & being penniless compels her to write for Blush! A bald photographer, an ex-model (Nina Van Hore) and ofcourse the inevitable assistant David Finch. Don’t miss them all in "JUST SHOOT ME".
(V) Raymond, who everybody loves, has a loving wife- 3 lovely kids, and of course a whole package of nosey mommie, i-care-less-daddy, brother (a cop) living next door. And the cops got a wife too now. Sounds pretty dull ha? Like the saas- bahu dramas on zee & star plus?? Whoooaa!! No way! Madam Ekta Kapoor should get some helpful tips from "EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND".
(VI) "SEX AND THE CITY". Aaah! Debates. Bad show! Excellent show! My my. Personally I loved the last coupla seasons where they spread their wings to fly !! and touch on topics other than sex & fashion too! Oh yes. Believe it. The Shows about 4 women who live their lives unhindered by prejudice & the standard society norms, and yet in a way are battling the same!
Charlotte- a hardcore romantic- forever falling in love with every person she dates in the first few minutes alone…! She battles her divorce (yep very painful- the guy it seems didn’t “do it!!”) and re-maries the lawyer who helped her do so (Harry-Absolute yummy-didn’t know bald men could be so cute!). Miranda – Strongly independent, cynic to the core. Mellows down eventually (yeah alright to SOME extent) after having a baby … and marriage (Yeah in that order). Samantha- Man! Shes the favorite one. Fiercely independent, fearless about her sexuality, cares a damn about the world. She has the balls. Balls of steel (I mean I’m sure you can hear them clank when she walks!). In the last season she fights breast cancer in the most brave & classy way any one can ever can! Carrie’s sorta a mix of all of these 3.
This bunch of characters does pep up singletons-- My fave quote: Carrie: Think about it. If you are single, after graduation there isn't one occasion where people celebrate you ... Hallmark doesn't make a "congratulations, you didn't marry the wrong guy" card. And where's the flatware for going onvacation alone?
(VII) "MTV- SEMI GIREBAAL"- A take off on our own princess of white.. Simi. This mimic (by Cyrus Sahukar) is one of the most hilarious I’ve come across in recent times. Her/his reaction to Abhay Deol who apparently offered her drinking water from ”Juhu”- “ooh! Water from the suburbs! No no no no!!!!” that kept me laughing whenever I thought of it!
(VIII) Opposites attract. Well well well, they do! But it materializes into marriage only in fairy tales and "DHARMA & GREG"! Dharma- An eccentric hippie, extremely compassionate, spiritual, yoga teacher. Greg- a successful lawyer (from Harvard or something) uptight, well to do chap. The ONLY thing common between the two is great sex! & yet they’re extremely fun & compatible!
(IX) "FRAISIER"- A Pompous, over the top psychiatrist deciphering ways outta his own problems in life (whattan irony!!!), (he’s an psychological advisor of sorts on a Radio talk show in Seattle…), his various love interests, his brother Niles & his babe Dapheny, their dad – an ex-cop. Fundu combo, dudes!
(X) 4 aliens descended on this planet. Took shape of 4 ordinary people & gave shape to the most extraordinary sitcom named "3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN"!
The High commander & the leader of the expedition is Dick- who is given the body of a human who’s a physics professor in a college (there are rapid sparks of attraction with his colleague Mary throughout the show). But instead of being a typical wise father figure he’s invariably selfish and stupid! Information Officer Tommyis given the body of a teenager boy who goes to college- saner of the lot. Communications officer Harryis quirky, (half eyes closed) who does nothing in particular. The security officer Sallyis given the body of a girl (who also does nothing in particular). Inspite of being sexy and beautiful she is manly & uncouth, and is struggling with being a woman! (It seems there isn’t any man/ woman concept in the aliens).
So Tom, Dick, Harry, Sally. Full-on Fun!

Sorry guys just sticking to the angrezi shows only… Do lemme know if you’ve missed out on any of these shows…. Cuz some have gotten off air. Also do let me know whether I’ve missed out on some shows that have had characters more bizarre than these!
