An uncomfortable stay would definitely spoil your holiday mood. Since Ooty is highly commercialized now, advance booking definitely matters during season.
Mouth shut and https://holidayiq.com/hotel+tamilnadu+ooty/search.php helped us to a certain extent to have a fair idea of categorization of hotels, with reasonably good reviews. An interesting point to remember is that the same hotel would give you different tariffs when contacted directly, thru holidaymakers.in, yatra.com, travelmasti.com/ooty.htm etc.
During this trip to we decided to try Hotel Tamilnadu, leaving our usual places of stay. We had a weeklong stay here till March 30, 2009.
In offseason Hotel Tamilnadu is a good option, if you’re not much particular about a very beautiful ambience. The site moves so fast and no hassles.
Travel: If you travel by bus or private vehicle via Mysore, you can get down on the way and is walkable from there. It is around 2 kms before KSRTC Busstand and Railway Station. From the bus stand or railway station auto rickshaw would cost you Rs.50/- and taxi is minimum. KSRTC bus stand and Railway station are situated adjacent to each other.
Location: Charring Road Cross, which is the heart of the town, yet the hotel is in a calm place. It is situated on a small hillock and from there you can have a good view of the valley. The hotel has a huge parking place, so parking is not an issue even for big buses. From Hotel Tamil Nadu, the first hairpin curve on your right side will take you to all shopping complexes, bazaars, all kinds of hotels, ATMs, medical shops and doctor’s clinics etc. It is less than 10 minutes walk. From here the hotspots are easily accessible in less than 25 minutes.
Ambience: Average and maintenance is also average. With little more effort, it can be kept more clean and beautiful. Since it has a large compound it will definitely have a more impact.
Check in time: 10 O’clock.(it is not 24 hours). We reached at 7 a.m. But were given the room by 7. 10 a.m itself since it was available.
Rooms: are of old type but clean. It reminds you some of the public sector buildings in late seventies. Room heater is available at extra cost. You have separate geysers in bathrooms and hot water is provided up to 10 a.m.only. We stayed in a double room on the first day(as no deluxe rooms or cottage was available while booking) and the remaining days in a cottage.
Double room: It is of old type. Here you have almost same facilities with minor differences when compared to the cottage. The room has a balcony with front view. Also it has a TV with all channels. Some small issues can be overlooked considering the tariff. What more can you expect for the amount you pay for the double room.
Cottage: old type and looks is also old though clean. As usual you have a double bed and a single bed in separate rooms. The room size is quite big and is provided with 2 wardrobes. You also have a balcony with a seating arrangement. The cottages are facing a lawn wherein you can have campfire upon request.
Service: Staff are polite and courteous. Tea/Coffee is 24/7 available closer to the reception for Rs.8(instant). It was of good quality. The hotel has a mini bar and a conference room.
Breakfast and Dinner: Food is average and is like homely except that it was little salty than normal. Only Vegetarian - Buffet 7.30 am and pm
Breakfast: cereal(cornflakes), bread-butter-jam, iddle and Uttappam with sambar and chutney, Pongal / uppuma(vermacilli or rava), tea. The cost was Rs.49/- head.
Dinner:Soup, chapatti and curry(different options available), rice(plain/ curd rice/ pudina rice/ vegetable pulavu) sambar, rasam, poriyal etc., The cost was Rs.69/- per head.
Tariff:@ https://ttdconline.com/hotelroomreservation3.aspx?hotelid=15. If you stay for 3 consecutive days you get a discount of 10% which would be adjusted against the luxury tax.
Site-seeing: Hotel has a wide network with many taxiwalas and travels. Taxis would cost you Rs.700/-onwards and travles for Rs.130/- per day. Few travels and many taxis park their vehicle in the itself.
