Syriana - written and directed by Stephen Gaghan of the Academy Award winner Traffic deals with issues that affects everyone of us, though the magnitude of the impact differs.
First look at the poster of the movie - and something extremely interesting strikes you. George Clooney's eyes are blindfolded and the catchline says - Everything is connected
Now the question arising is "What does this all mean?"
Let's get this straight - Syriana is not a simple and single layered movie. The movie has multiple layers, various characters, various shades and of course a lot happening!
Subtext 1 - Fights to seek control in the Persian oil fields. Merger between two US oil giants.
Subtext 2 - Refusal of oil digging rights to a US co by the Emir and interest in bringing a reformist movement in the Persian region.
Subtext 3 - Cleaning act / cover up act to ensure smooth merger of the two Oil cos. Corruption at the State Dept.
Sutext 4 - Lives of unemployed workers at the Oil fields.
Subtext 5 - George Clooney, CIA and the projection of Emir as a potential threat to the US.
On the face of it these subtexts might not seem to be connected, however, deep down, these very incidents and subtexts are all interconnected.
To figure out the connection, watch the movie.
The movie, through these various plots, exposes the dirty political game played by the US to gain control on the Oil fields and thereby dictate terms to the entire World. It also exposes the fact that how Corruption is used as a cover by the State Department.
The story and screenplay are so engaging and borrows so much from the newspapers and events occuring around us that one cannot help but identify with the proceedings.
The usage of a minimalist background score only helps in building up the tension. The camerawork blends in seamlessly with the narrative and acts as a part of the film.
Performances are prasieworhy and George Clooney stands out in a role that demanded more of expressions and less verbal stuff.
An excellent film for those who want to know the real games played by the US.
