''we are the country and we can make the difference if we want...........''

Hi MSians!!!

This is Snigdha again……..well today I am going to write about the movie “SWADES-we, the people”….the punch line actually tells a lot about the movie…I watched the movie on 15th September on stargold, but due to some problem I missed a portion of it…so today I watched it again as it was coming again on stargold… first of all let me write about the problem for which I missed the movie first time..any guesses?? Well the current went out and “jab tak mere ghar pe bijli aayi, tab tak to charanpur mein bhi bijli aa gayi thi”…he he he…

Story line:

This is a story about a person named as Mohan Bhargab, a highly talented meteorologist or weather analyst, working in NASA. He misses his childhood caretaker Kaveri amma and comes to India to visit her. He goes to an old age home where Kaveri amma used to stay. He gets the address of her and the place is a small village named Charanpur. He goes there in a caravan as he is very sophisticated and he thinks that he can’t adjust with all those things in an Indian village. In his caravan he has everything starting from mineral water to computer… in Chranpur he meets Gita and her small brother with whom Kavery amma is staying. He starts liking Gita due to her “simplicity yet intelligence”. Gita is a high educated girl and teaches in the village school. Mohan starts respecting her views and ideas… in the true sense he falls in love with her!!

Mohan finds out that the major problem in Charanpur is current or “bijli”. Maximum area of the village is under no power supply. He also finds out other problems like illiteracy, caste problems, and child marriage, poverty. He tries to help as much as he can but he never has the plan of staying back there. He always wanted to come back to America with Kaveri amma , Gita and her brother.

Mohan tries very hard and he arranges every little thing required for the generation of power using the water of a small stream instead of waiting for the government to do something and he finally makes it possible… He thinks that after solving the power supply problem he will return. But neither Gita nor Kaveri amma are ready to go to America, rather they want to stay in the village.

So finally he goes back all alone…but he can’t stay there for a long time… no not because of Gita or Kaveri amma. Of course he misses them, but there was also something else which drew him towards India again. Staying in a small village of India he actually could know what the real India is. Real India is not what we feel staying in the metro cities, but real India is far away from that. 70% of the Indian popularity stays in the villages and Mohan bhargab discovered the real India through their lives. He not only started liking but he started loving and giving respect to his originality.

My views:

It is true that India has gone on a long way of progress after the independence but we are still much back to other countries. There are various reasons to this problem. But broadly these reasons can be divided into two categories- external and internal problems. External problems constitute terrorism, inter country rivalry etc etc. and internal problem constitutes poverty, illiteracy, population hike, caste bar, religion based havoc etc etc. Well this movie was a blend of everything what India is like today. It pointed out almost every internal problem of our country that is holding it back from going ahead. At the same point we could find a taste of romance, patriotism, respect for older people, love for our relationships and above all a closure view of the lives of villagers, away from almost all facilities we have in the cities!! Still these people are living happily; they are together during happiness, festivals and during tragedies, havocs.

The protagonist, Mohan (played by Shahrukh Khan) represents our generation who has a respect for the country but does not know how to show it. He finds out the way while his short duration stay in a small village. He sees the difficulties they are facing. He tries to solve every little problem at-least in that small village. So like him if our youth instead of applying their valuable knowledge in other countries can work for our own country then what a remarkable change it can make to India!! I had read somewhere that… it is impossible to change the world around you unless and until you change yourself and your views regarding the world…the same thing happens here. Mohan realizes that working there in America he can never make any difference to his own country. Ya, of course he will get a pleasurable life style and fame-n-money. But he can never get the satisfaction of serving his own land!! He knew that he can’t bring any revolutionary change in the whole country, still he could make a remarkable change in the so called village and he was confident that there will be enough Mohan bhargabs to make each village of this country a better place to live in.

My favorite scene in the movie was when Mohan buys a container made up of clay for 25 paisa and drinks water from it…he pays the small boy 1 rupee and the train goes away before the boy could return the rest of the paisa. It makes me to remember an incident of Swamy Vivekananda where he ate chana of 25 paisa but paid the chanawala 1 rupee…According to me it was the major turning point of the movie where the protagonist goes through a drastic change in his thinking and behavior.

So Ashutosh Gwaliker had made a really good movie, which spreads the little but very powerful message to “we, the people” that “we, the people” are the actual power of this country. We can do anything if we have the determination and strength of unity. Our country is not just a piece of land rather WE are the country. And WE are responsible for everything happening to this country. So it should be our duty to serve it in as many ways as we can. Mohan bhargab has his own way…we may have different but there should always be a helping hand behind the initiatives for these types of works.

Other factors:

Shah rukh khan was really very good in the roll of Mohan bhargab. And though it was the debut movie of Gayatree but she was so natural in her acting…she was actually the perfect choice for the role of Gita, a high-educated yet down to earth character. Almost every actor in this movie has worked to the expectation. The scenario of the village was also seemed to be natural… all the songs were good… especially “ yun hi cahla chal rahi…” and the title-cum-background song “ ye jo desh hai mera..swadesh hai mera…”.

So this was what I felt about the movie…thanks for having patient and you are most welcome for dropping a comment. So wait till my next review…till then bye and take care..

Snigdha….
