Year after year I keep telling myself that it doesn't pay to get caught up in the hype, and year after year I disappoint myself by doing just that. But in my defense this was Superman!!! I grew up on Superman. When Superman II came out I was there! I even had a Superman outfit once! So it pains me to have to write this not so glowing review about the latest installment in the series, though not nearly as much as it did having to suffer through it in the first place!
So Superman's been gone for a while. Where? To Krypton apparently... Didn't anyone tell him that Krypton was destroyed when he was a wee little baby? Why did he go there? Who knows... Not any of the viewers for sure... Not even the the director apparently since no explanation is offered. Well anyway, he comes back and just in the nick of time too, because his arch enemy Lex Luthor is about to hatch his evil scheme to take over the world... Honestly Lex - you had 5 years of Superman free existence in which to take over the world... Where's your sense of timing?
So anyway, enter Superman / Clark Kent, who simply strolls into the Daily Planet office to find that his job is waiting for him just as if he'd never been gone... In fact it's just like the old days except that his girlfriend has a kid, is engaged and doesn't love him anymore... As for Lois Lane, if anyone finds anything remotely endearing about her in this movie please let me know because I'm not about to watch the entire movie again to find out. She comes across as a whiny look-at-me-i'm-a-21st-century-woman-who-needs-no-help-except-when-i'm-caught-in-
a-crashing-plane-or-held-hostage-by-an-evil-megalomaniac sort of person. Kevin Spacey almost saves the day with his portrayal of Lex Luthor, but screws it up when given his chance to destroy Superman once and for all, stands there gloating like a moron. But that's the script-writer's fault I guess.
Well anyway Superman eventually saves the day (and the world obviously) by lifting a kryptonite infested continent out of the sea and hurling it into outer space. Am I the only one who gathers that if your superpowers have been sapped by kryptonite and you fall out of the sky you die a painful death, or at the very least, muss up your hair? Apparently not... You get hospitalised and no one really minds if you leave without paying your bill either, or did Superman have health insurance?
I loved the Spiderman movies and am a huge fan of Batman Begins. This pathetic offering was obviously a move to cash in on the superhero movie trend, and it isn't a patch on the above mentioned movies, the only highlight being the epic musical score. Come on Mr. Director whatever your name is... Superman died with Christopher Reeves. Let him rest in peace. Please don't insult our intelligence with crap like this!
