I had just come home from mumbai after 2 months to b with my eight months pregnant wife on 28th April 2008. I couldnt believe she had a bigger tummy in just two months. after several hours, by 1030pm we all wen to bed.

There was thunder and lightening and at about 11pm the power went out. The heat in Cochin is terrible these days. and the humidity is unbearable. even at night. and it hadn't rained. So I went over to the window and flicked it open to let in some air. At the exact same time, my wife woke up and sat on her bed looking very dazed. But she went back to bed immediately.

At about 130am(i think!) she woke me up and started crying. She said she wanted to go to the hospital coz she was feeling uncomfortable in her tummy.(the power had come back some time!) My mom came into our room and when she heard she asked me to call the hospital. But I was in disbelief. I mean she still had a month to go. she couldnt be in labor NOW!$#$^

And yet she was.!

We consulted the wonderful lady doctor at Sunrise hospital till now and so I called the hospital to ask them what I should do. A lady picked up the call(probably the receptionist.) And as soon as she heard the panic in my voice she asked me to hold on the line. it was not even a minute before a woman picked up the call( I assume it is a nurse.) and she told me not to panic. and said that an ambulance is on the way to our house. She very kindly told me to pack up some cloths and necesary items and wait at the door for the ambulance.

But no matter what, I just kept panicking. aIl  I kept thinking was that how iresponsible the hospitals are and that it would be an hour before it reached home. BUT I WAS WRONG! It must have been about 15 minutes when the ambulance landed at my doorstep. Quickly they lifted my wife in a wheelchair into the ambulance. I loaded myself into van and we were off.

We reached the hospital real fast and we unloaded right at the front door.(not even casuality!) . There were two nurses waiting for us.(One was a head nurse). They took us to the elevator and we went to to the Labor floor.  Then one of the nurses said that only my wife will be allowed into the labor room for now. So I waited tensely outside. The other nurse said "it looksl ike your wife is in early labor, we have contacted the doctor. She will be here soon." I Made a few calls to my wifes mom and my mom. Finally seeing my plight the nurse said it would be fine for me to go in as there was just one patient in the room. and also since my wife was becoming hypertensive being alone. That was the nicest gesture! I went in to a very large room named "labor" which had atleast six beds. and my poor wife was lying in the cornermost bed. She started crying even more after seeing me. I tried to calm her down by telling her the doctor was on the way.

But seeing that my wife wasnt calming down the nurse called the doctor again on the phone and was instructed to give her a calming shot. Well it lasted 20 mins maybe! After which she started panicing again. I was surprised I wasnt rushed to a pharmacy or labs to get meds and pay bills.

Thankfully the doctor came in after a gruesome 30mins and immediately checked on my wife. The doctor came to me and said that she was in labor but it will be a long time before she delivers. But if its in any harmful to my wife or baby she would go for a c-section. I was reassured that everything ws under control.

I was asked to step outside once again. The waiting was maddening. I was sitting at the waiting area.

Finally after about an hour. the doctor came to me and said that my wife has asked for a pain killer shot.and that shes about to give it to her.  I nodded in consent.

After that my wife relatively calmed down. I was allowed to see her for five or 10 mins evry hour or so. at about 6 am the doctor told me that it was about time and that my wife would be taken to delivary room. and wished me luck.

I called mom and MIL and asked them to pray. Finally, after maybe an hour or 2.(wich seemed an eternity!)  the doctor herself came out and told me that I am the proud Father of a sweet little girl! My girl! My daughter!

She was about 20 inches and 2 kgs! My daughter Merrisa entered this world at 715 am on 29th April 2008!

Mother and daughter are fine. Daughter is being taken to NICU to be put in an incubator as shes a premature baby.

I soon called everyone I knew and gave them the news. My mom came to the hospital soon. We waited a while and we were allowed to visit the NICU to see the little one.

She was enclosed in a glass box like a precious gem. she was Pink and sleeping peacefully.

my wife was wheeled to the NICU soon to meet her daughter who decided to bring us joy earlier that expected!

My daughter had to be in the NICU for another 2 days before the doctor was sure she was doing really well.

I would like to thank the hospital staff of Sunrise for their state of the art service and fanastic facilities!

Im sure it would have been a horrendeous experience elsewhere. I am forever indebted to the wonderful receptionist who picked up my call, the nurse who answered my cal. the driver of the ambulance for reaching so fast, the nurses for taking such good care of my wife and my little one.and Doctor S for taking care of everything else!.

We were given a personal room for staying the week. There were timely follow up check ups through out the week for both Merrisa nd my wife. It was a small fee to pay when we left as I would have paid them with my life for the services they provided.

Thank you so much Sunrise and the wonderful Doctor S!

I recommend this place to anyone who wants to be taken care of just like how their mothers would.
