I gave my IELTS in 2017 and got the perfect score. Well I am not saying that you need to get a perfect score on IELTS. Anything greater than 8 is good enough to be considered pretty much everywhere. Your GRE score will matter a lot more. But acing IELTS definitely does a lot for your admissions. My IELTS prep took around 2 months while preparing simultaneously for my GRE.
I started off with taking a mock test to see what I know and what I don't. And I was surprised to find that while I knew most of it, it was taking time and that's when I realised practice was going to be key! So I joined Inspirus Education - An IELTS coaching Institute in Bandra - https://inspiruseducation.com/. During my 1st session itself I got to know that it's more about the strategy with which I approach my test than anything else. They assigned a mentor to personalise my prep and that really helped. Together we kept identifying areas of improvement and working on them. 4 weeks of prep and 4 mock tests later - I found that I was very comfortable with everything right from my concepts to my test strategy to keeping up with time. The rest was all magic of the test day when I maintained my calm and just focussed on the test.
