When you want a quick meal, but don't want it to be an unhealthy burger or pizza, Subway is the place to go (or call)! There are outlets all over Bombay and the submarine sandwich lover that I am, I've visited practically each one! I've heard some people say 'Who's gonna pay 60 bucks for a sandwich?', but you need to bite into one of these loaded, yummy sandwiches to realize that it's extremely reasonably priced! The vegetarian sandwiches start at Rs 60 with the Veggie Delite, while the non-veg sandwiches start at Rs 80 (if I remember right) for a 6-inch sandwich. If you're particularly hungry, they also have 12-inch subs, although I doubt anyone can put one of those away at a single sitting.

Something I appreciate is that the veg and non-veg sections are on opposite sides of the cash counter, so there's no chance of mix-ups. You have to go to the section of your choice, choose the kind of bread you want -  there's white, brown, oregano, and honey-oat to choose from. The loaves of bread are freshly baked in the ovens right there. And finally you tell the person behind the counter exactly what you want. If you like hot subs, they'll even toast your sandwich in the oven after it's ready, and wrap it up, and it's ready for you to pay for and go enjoy.

The vegetables they have on offer are the usual - tomatoes, onions, capsicum, cucumbers, and also gherkins and jalapenos (some like it hot!), and of course there's cheese. You can choose whatever else you want added to the sandwich - my personal favorites are the Paneer Tikka sub and the Corn and Peas. Most non-vegetarians seem to love the Tuna sub and the Chicken Teriyaki. My favorite part comes when all the vegetables are stuffed into the bread and it's time for the dressing. They have this delicious Lite Mayo, and at least six other dressings to choose from - Honey mustard, Thousand island, Southwest, Olive oil blend, Vinaigrette, and more!

The beverages on offer are the usual colas, iced teas, cold coffees, and hot tea and coffee, nothing to really get excited about. But, don't forget to try the cookies. They have a decent variety of huge, delicious cookies, my favorite being the double chocolate chip. If that's too much chocolate for you (is there such a thing as too much chocolate?!) then you can try the oatmeal and raisin or plain chocolate chip. The cookies are priced at Rs 25 each, but if you buy three, it'll cost you Rs 60, and the price gets lower as the number of cookies gets higher (cheaper by the dozen or something!) They've recently introduced brownies and apple pie, both are pretty good. So the desert options here are pretty satisfying. You can also get a bag of chips with your meal. In fact they have a Subway Meal, where you pay Rs 30 over the cost of your sandwich and get an aerated drink and a cookie or bag of chips with your sandwich - not a bad deal!

Subway outlets accept Ticket Restaurant and Sodexo Coupons, so it becomes a good place to get rid of some (if your company hands them out every month). These days they also have a Sub-of-the-Day scheme going on, where a particular sub sandwich (6-inch) is available at just Rs. 60, which is a pretty good bargain, specially for meat-eaters. The sub-of-the-day is vegetarian three days of the week, and non-veg four days.

Oh, and if you can't make your way to one of the outlets, they also deliver! This is specially useful when you're working late at work and want to grab a quick bite so your tummy stops protesting. But it's much more fun standing at the counter telling the person making your sandwich exactly how you want it (extra gherkins, loads of mayo, yum yum)! So next time you're in the mood for some healthy yet yummy food, Subway is the place for you!
