While out shopping one day with my sister-in-law, those nasty little pangs of hunger got the better of us. Racing to the food court in the center of the mall, we were agog with all the vendors: Sbrarro, Chick-Fil-A, TCBY - just to name a few.

As we turned, being mesmerized by all the different vendors and cookie shops, we saw a quickly-moving line of people at another little ''fast food'' counter. The counter was Subway.

Hey, why not! We've never actually tried this place so now is the time. After all, the cost was reasonable.

And the line was moving quickly.

First of all, there is a variety of bread from which to choose. We chose the Oregano-Parmesan. They offer either a 6'' or foot long hero. In addition to this, if you prefer not to have a hero, you can have a salad. The choice is yours to make.

Next was our choice of meats or vegetables. Vegetables? Yes, this place is vegetarian friendly!

After choosing our meats, we then were given the opportunity to choose our own toppings and fillers: lettuce, tomato, onion, whatever! This place is a ''design your own hero'' type of store. Whatever you want on your sandwich, you can have.

They even offer hot heros (like a meatball parmesan that is out of this world).

Since that first day, my husband and I have had Subways often - I mean VERY OFTEN!

Their bread is always fresh being made right there on the premises. Their meats, like their vegetables, are sliced in the back room.

The service is sort of like an assembly line. Your first server will slice your bread and add the meat. Next person will finish your sandwich with any garnish you desire and heat your sandwich should you be getting something hot. The third and last person will handle the purchase.

I mentioned I'd eaten the meatball hero. The meatballs were the size of golf balls. Maybe some people might think they are a bit small, but when you place them on a hero, my opinion is that they are the perfect size. After all, just how big can YOU open your mouth! The sauce is extremely tasty: it is neither too spicey or too mild and the cheese is melted to perfection.

They have one sandwich that is my favorite. It's called the Subway BMT. Cute and catchy name, but it is actually their version of an Italian hero. You really have to try this!

What Subway has gotten noted for is their ''7 subs with 6 grams of fat or less''. I'm sure everyone has seen Jarad on their commercials.

These particular 6'' subs are:

Veggie Delite /3g of fat/0 mg. Cholesterol/232 calories

Turkey breast /4g of fat/20mg. cholesterol/282 calories

turkey & ham /4g of fat/23mg. cholesterol/288 calories

roast beef /5g of fat/20mg. cholesterol/296 calories

subway club* /5g of fat/25mg. cholesterol/293 calories

ham /5g of fat/25mg. cholesterol/293 calories

roasted chicken /6g of fat/48mg. cholesterol/342 calories

(*their club consists of ham, turkey and roast beef)

The fat, cholesterol and calorie counts for the above named sandwiches INCLUDE the bread.

Of course, there are other sandwiches from which you can choose. My husband's favorite is turkey with lettuce, tomato, onion, black olives with a dab of mayo on the oregano-parm bread.

The salemi is mouth-watering good. Their newest hero, the Chicken Teriyaki is the best yet! Oh, Lord! I could go on and on. But, hey, I'm working up an appetite here.

While each Subway Store is franchised, the main headquarters is located in Milford, CT. They have a website if you'd be interested in checking them out: at their official site.

In addition to the great tasting food that is offered by this eatery, I feel I must compliment each store on their staffs. So far, I have gone to several Subways in my neighborhood (and on out-of-state trips) and have always been greeted with a friendly hello. They are courteous and quick and more importantly, make the sandwiches right where you can see them.

(and they wear rubber gloves to keep germs from being transferred from their hands to the food) . Why do I mention this? Although Burger King, McDonalds and all the other fast food places let you create your own burger, the food is prepared away from your line of vision. Yet, if you look passed the counter hard enough, you can see bits of pieces of what happens in the back. I've seen many food prepares NOT wearing protective gloves while handling the food.

One more thing I should add here is the price of Subways heros. If you decide to get the 6'' hero only, the cost is usually round 3.00. The 6'' hero ''meal'' is $4.50 and includes a soft drink and a bag a chips. (The foot long is slightly higher in cost). Are these sandwiches worth the money? Without a doubt! Not only are they reasonably priced - and most are low in fat - they taste great. Speaking of great tasting food, isn't it lunch time yet?
