What is opposite of
love? Is it hate? I think no, but betrayal. Of course hate is bad and it hurts. But betrayal hurts more. This is so, because when we hate, we hate a
cause or a person. But when we betray,
we betray the person, the cause, the person’s faith and love. Moreover when we hate we are sincere and when
we betray we kill our belief in ourselves.
Death of love is more hurting and betrayal is nothing but death of love
and self.
Subramaniyapuram is the story of five friends, their love, revenge
and betrayal. The five lives happily
with their small earnings. Each of them
strive for survival but their friendship was so strong and each helping each other. When Azhagu (Jai) starts loving Thulasi (Swati)
all the gang was behind Azhagu. They
commit a crime for the love and on faith.
The faith was let down. Revenge
start showing its red face and the gang is now after Kanagu (who is the Swati’s
father’s younger brother) who failed to bail them out as promised. Fear…violence….promises and betrayal…the
movie climbs to all mountains of love and all valleys of betrayal.
This movie is quite different from any movie released these
days and gives a look of the golden year movies of 80s. The story is planned that way and each frame
makes sure to transport you to that era.
The bell bottom pants to davani
girls to the poverty…. The director
re-produced the era with brilliance.
There is nothing great in the story, but simplicity. We have heard this time again, but the presentation
made the film special.
The casting is perfect.
Jai was superb and his
romance and smiling face will not go off from viewer minds that easily. The director Sasikumar himself appear in the movie and get a meatier role. He was quite ok. Swati
was quite cool and the actress gives the typical village teenage girl’s
innocent look so convincingly. She is so
sweet in the role. Her role didn’t
gives her much chance to talk but didn’t she talk to us a lot through her
eyes? Fantastic! Ganja Karuppu, Vichithran, Mari all did their role with the
required difference and perfection. Samudrakani as the beautiful villain
too was quite cool. Overall, the
performance was superb.
The music of the film too gave a new feel. One song, where the love between Azhagu and
Swati was shot was simply super…(Kankal…)which planted the village feel and the
innocence of the characters in listeners mind.
Otherwise the music was quite ordinary.
Choreography was suitable.
Background music was brilliant and the sets - simply realistic and
awesome. Editing could have been
better, especially in the first half.
The plus points for the movie? The storyline, presentation, cast, performance
and some excellent moments!
On the minus side, all the important incidents or turning
points of the movie is rushed where sufficient time is wasted to display
ordinary relations. Though the slowness
in story telling is acceptable (considering the task of transporting the
audience back to a generation) the same at the expense of logic to the turning points
of the movie is not a good experiment.
The villain’s sorrow is not depicted well, nor the sympathy of the
heroes. Had the heroine requested for
a help in such situation, the betrayal would have been more affective. The decision to kill, the decision to keep
it as a profession, it all demand some convincing answer. Moreover a lot of blood and violence is
thrown out of this simple village love and friendship story.
The first half of the movie could have been better where the
second half compensated for the let downs in the first half.
The movie is quite a
way ahead if we compare it to the films released with much hype, this
year. It is a different movie where
human emotions and love woven nicely. It
tells a touching story from a different period in a realistic way. Recommended!!
