Studying in India Vs. Studying Abroad is a good subject for a * Debate . There was a time when Studying Abroad ** was a craze. Under-graduate students were going abroad for getting B. A. degrees. I know a student, who after his Matriculation Examination, somehow managed to go to USA, and got into a High School again. Waste of time and money. Is it not ? For post-graduate studies in certain subjects in which advanced training in India is not available, one could think of some Universities abroad.
Our IITs are second to none in the world, and those who pass out from IITs get prized jobs in India and abroad. Our Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) compares very favourably with USA's Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). How many Institutions like our Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore are there in foreign countries? Sir C. V. Raman was associated with the IISc. His Raman Research Institute is a unique institute for research in Spectroscopy and Scattering of Light.
The Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, conducts world class research in agricultural subjects. Its Division of Agricultural Physics created a sensation in the scientific circles, when it introduced atomic radiation into the wheat variety called * Sarbati Sanora *, thus making it resistant to pests. These have been Indian achievements.
There are certain disciplines like Rural Development, Rural Management and the like, which are rooted in Indian soil, Indian mind, Indian life and Indian culture. I will never advise any student to go abroad for studying these subjects. Rather I would recommend Viswa Bharati, Gandhigram, IIRM (Anand) and other similar institutions.
Would you go abroad to study and learn the skills of Odisi, Bharat Natyam and Kuchipudi ? A Comparative Study on Indian Dance Forms and Foreign Dance Forms may be OK. A study of Russian Ballad may be OK.
My purpose is not to discourage Indian students from going abroad for higher studies. It is very expensive. One US Dollar now amounts to Rs.48.50. By all means go for Doctoral and Post-Doctoral studies. And mind you, it is a lot of hard work. Best of Luck !
