Let us attack only Graduate Level Education in America.
Pros:
Money - There just quite a bit of it floating around and it is being shared. Even full time students can make decent money. ONly IISc gives money to the students for studying. Jobs after masters/ PhD helps you make money quickly...Opens up a world of possibility.
Education - I felt standard of education in the UG level to be slightly lacking but I have extreme high regard for graduate level education. Doctoral program requirements in general rocks. I think there are just too many advantages here to list out. But let me try. Freedom, Choice, Quality, Quantity, Facilities, Fun, Freedom (Have I mentioned that before ?)(will keep updating as and when I find more words on thesaurus)
Research Funding - Abundant research funding equips graduate students with all contemporary tools. Someone mentioned IISc. ofcourse great, but almost every college in the top 20 list has equivalent research opportunities.
Work - There are certain fields especially in the tech sector, where you would not be able to find a decent job in India. Taking engineering for example, it is impossible to find one company that does work on theoretical electromagnetics.
Jobs - Person studying in USA has a better chance of making a job in the US than someone doing a masters/bachelors in India. Graduates from USA univs are paid more in general. So if your ultimate aim is to settle in USA. hey ! Be here ASAP!! :p.
Quotas - Get around the quota system. Stop paying the price for what some of your ancestors might have done!
Any more ?
Flaws in past appraisals:
People generally say IIT is great compared to MIT. no doubt. but they forget,
Whats the intake of IIT and whats the intake of all the Ivy league colleges ? Can Indian engineers rely on IIT alone ? IITs take in mebbe 3000 a year ? Where else ?
Where is graduate level education in IIT ? How good is it ? what is the kind of research going on there ? IIT has a good name because of its students, and not because of facilities. (Indian standards... IIT facilities are great... but a college ranked 100 among American colleges has the same facilities).
Research potential. Almost zilch in IIT. IISc great agreed... but again enrollment ?
Everyone mentions money. It is just temporary. If you are decently good you are going to pay off the debts in a matter of months.
US wants 7 million Indian teachers ? me becoming teacher immeJietely ba. Some of the most practical teachers I have seen, are in USA. Anyway, in graduate level... teachers ? guides....! there are enough of those in America.
Madras Institute of technology = massachusetts I.T ? !! (wheres the bewildered emoticon?)(please compare number of nobel laureates from 2 schools).
Cons:
- No idea. You tell me. Choose and argue.
Brain Drain ?
Patriotism ?
Psychological effects ? :p
After education (H1 status) is totally a new ballgame. would have to write a book
about that. Far too many factors to consider.
