I run a travel agency in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh and operate a current account in State Bank of India, Lower Bazaar, Shimla branch. I pay salary and other expenses to my drivers in their bank accounts.
On August 8, 2012 I sent my new driver to this branch to open a saving account whose permanent address is of Distt. Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh. The concerned official at the bank refused to open the saving account saying the driver did not have residence proof of his Shimla address.
I had attached the following documents with the application form:
Copy of Driving License having address of Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh
Copy of Adhar card, having address of Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh
A letter from employer verifying the employment mentioning his Shimla address.
Upon refusal of the opening of bank account I brought it to the notice of the concerned official that bank accounts of other driver has been opened in the the same branch with the same documents earlier. I wonder how the bank rules can change with the change of person sitting on the counter?
The concerned person at the bank also had the audacity to say that I was obliged the last time. It is news to me that opening a saving bank account is considered as obligation by State Bank employees!
It is clearly mentioned in the application form that letter from the employer is admissible which was provided in this case. When earlier my other driver's account was opened with the same set of documents what is now stopping State bank to open the saving account now?
What has disturbed me is the superior attitude shown by the concerned employee who did not had the decency to speak to a woman and when I tried to reason with him he got completely offended.
Me and my entire family have always banked with State Bank of India forever but after this experience I will not recommend anyone to enter this bank.
Pathetic, rude and staff needs to learn manners is all I can say about State Bank of India.
