Goa at it's best . Review on Souza Lobo, Calangute, Goa

The sea , soft sand , fresh sea food ,good wine, great music and getting your money's worth . Aren't these images the spring up in our minds when we think of Goa ? Souza Lobo brings all these together to make ur evening there a rich & fun filled experience .

Souza Lobo is located on Calangute beach ( it's the second restaurant on the left as you enter the beach through the main entrance ) . Like all Goan restaurants on the beach , they have 2 parts . The main restaurant and the extension on the beach ie as evening comes they setup tables on the beach itself under the open sky . The restauarant itself does look classy but when you are in Goa in December , nothing beats eating out in the open with the stars above you and the soft sand below your feet and the soft lapping of the waves in front of you , does it ? Ahhh ..such bliss !!

They have some live music going on and also have a small dance floor . The day we went for dinner , they had a one-man band playing soft soulful numbers inviting people onto the dance floor . Lots of foreigners ,especially really old couples took to the floor doing the jive and slow dancing .

Ok , lets get down to the best part now , the food !!!!! There were 6 of us in our dinner party and we had a wide variety of dishes . We started of with a bottle of port wine , a couple of sweet and sour chicken soups , a plate of fish fingers and a plate of stuffed crab . Everything was really tasty . I just loved the stuffed crab . They remove the the top shell of the crab and stuff the crab meat along with the masala . There's no breaking the shell involved , so if u have a problem with breaking the crab shell, this ones for you . A friend who hails from the Konkan region felt that while the stuffed crab was nice , he's tasted better back home .

Next , the main course was steamed rice and prawn curry , fried pomfret (the one with rava crust ) , chicken biryani , fish fillet with cheese . The fried pomfret was delicious and so was the fish fillet with cheese . Both got a unanimous 8/10 for taste . Though I didnt have a lot of hopes on the chicken biryani ( well, why would anyone want to order chicken in the sea food capital of the country??) , I must say that it was really tasty too . Another 8/10 from those who had it . But the best was the prawn curry . It was really tasty and well done and the prawns just melted in your mouth . Easily among the best I've ever had ... 9/10

Dessert was mango ice cream , caramel custard ( only thing which dissapointed ) and apple pie with vanilla ice cream ( recommended ) .

And the bill was around 1350 .Might be a little more expensive than your average Goan restaurant . But the food was definetly worth every paisa and a steal compared to Mumbai standards . Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeettt !!!!!!!!!!

The service was very propmt and professional . The waiters were not as friendly and accomodating as the ones on the beach shacks of Baga ..but they weren't bad or anything . An occasional street dog can come sniffing near your chairs and look at you mournfully hoping u'll give him some morsels. But thats only because the foreigners seem to like cuddling them and encourage them to their tables . But thats a hazard of having food out in the open and the waiters usually get rid of the dogs if they sense that you dont like the dog around you .

So next time when you are in an around Calnagute , dont forget to grab a bite at Souza Lobo and enjoy the best of all Goa has to offer . Cheers!!!
