South City Mall - considering it has received various descriptions like "Largest mall in Eastern India" is worth a visit. It is located on Anwar Shah Road in Jadavpur area of the southern fringes of the city.
It's not very far from maybe Park Street or the airport, but I guess that depends on the traffic. The famed Kolkata traffic..:)
Now, coming to the main factors, the first thing about SCM is that, yes it is huge. H-U-G-E! The mall covers plenty of space. Now that is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The huge area of the mall manages to accomodate plenty of people without making them feel very crowded. On other other hand, you'll have plenty of walking to reach anywhere. So, if you think of going there after a tiring day, take my advice and DON't!
Brands. Yes, there are a lot. Sometimes too confusing. But then again, what else would you expect from a mall? SCM would probably be the shopping destination for the urban Kolkatan, because it has brands from all ends of the spectrum. But I stress on the fact that this is not a place which rewards the thrifty.
And that makes me come to the one disadvantage which I may make about SCM. It is an expensive mall....and except for Spencer's on the ground floor, I doubt you will get anything at a cheap place. That's an ironical thing at the mall, you'll see loads of the youth crowd roaming about which might give you a notion that this is a mall for the young and thus cheap. But most of the guys (and I include myself) here because it's a cool place to roam around. Not even half enter any of the shops, leave alone anything.
As for the food court, yes, there are loads of seats but its mismanaged and disorganised. The food is nothing great but it will basically turn cold while you are carrying it from the counter to your seat (yes, you have to walk A LOT!). However, the entry of three biggies, SUBWAY, PIZZA HUT and KFC, I think will improve this.
To sum up, SCM is an enjoyable place if you have time and you feel energized. The Fame is good, nothing to write to your mom about. Parking is very good, a plus point in favour of the mall. And as I said before, loads of brands, but make sure you have the moolah!
