I am writing this review because the reviews so far are written when PS2 was not officially available in India. During Aug'03 Milestone Interactive (https://milestoneinteractive.com) has launched PS2 officially in India. First lets go to PS2 review itself.
PS2 is the first of its kind console to be developed by Sony next to its PS1. Its very powerful and there are great games for it. But today there are two other game consoles Xbox & GameCube which are much powerful than PS2 which came into market after 2years of PS2s launch. Now why some one should consider PS2 rather than Xbox or GameCube because they are much powerful, which means that games will have better graphics? Well one reason I find is the excellent game collection of PS2 over the years, which gives a plenty of choice and variety to play and there are lot of classics. Xbox and GameCube collection is very limited, one more reason is that they are not launched in India (I will come to smuggled things later). Recently there is new innovated Eye Toy camera for PS2 which is very innovative and fun to have one.
You can get Xbox which is smuggled along with games, but it costs relatively high compared official price of other countries. Also getting games might be difficult. Personally I don't encourage piracy and smuggled products. The official price of PS2 is also very high around 16k now. Also the official games also cost a lot any where from 2k to 3k. If you are serious about PS2 and not bother much about cost go for official one else wait till prices come down. Milestone attributes this high price towards customs and import duties.
To me ultimate game platform is PC. No console can deliver the graphic experience of it. But if you are hard-core gamer every now then you need to upgrade the PC hardware to continue playing new games which might become costly, though PC games are relatively much cheaper than PS2 games. PS2 hardware never changes thats the advantage you have. So if you are considering PS2 I will say go for it and don't encourage piracy.
