You must be surprised at someone writing a review on PS2 at this point of time where there is a hype and hollah of PS3's and XBOX 360's. Agreed they are really good gaming machines. But still PS2 is the one that rocks big time. I am someone who got his hands on PS2 just last week. I bought it from a shop in Mumbai. There are several reasons why PS2 is a big time winner still.
Games Library - It is a known fact that PS2 has a huge game library and there are awesome games like God of War that make this console a must buy. On top of it there are many classic games like the GTA series. Although there are very less games coming for this console now but still you have a huge library to make you go ahead and buy this console.
Modded Version -
Now this is little dicey situation for people with ethics. I myself bought a pre-modded PS2 which enables me to play not so original games on the console. The legal version of the games are bit expensive and start from 500 bucks. By default the original non modded PS2 can play games only froma certain region. But that is not the case with a modded one as it can play games from any region
- DVD & Audio CD PLayer -
The PS2 is not only a gaming console but also doubles up as a DVD player. It can also play audio CDs. It can play original DVDs irrespective of the region they are coded for. Morover my modded one also plays the roadside multiple movies in 1 p1rated DVD.
- Divx/Xvid/Mp3/Photo -
Now this is something. The PS2 is natively not made to play such content. But because of the modding it is now able to do so. There is an application available that can play those downloaded movies in avi format. It can also read mp3 files and we can also view photos on TV using that. Whats more it is also possible to read these files from the USB stick/ HDD connected to the console.
It is even possible to load Linux OS on the console. Its just that I dont know how.
The PS2 games though dont have the graphics that the next generation consoles have but the thing is worth your every penny I must say. If you are gamer then do not hesitate to go for this machine.
Another thing is that inspite of PS2 being so old and PS3 coming in as a replacement, Sony still manufactures PS2 and the latest SCHP-90006 version is quarter the size of original PS2. Its very small and light weight. This version is not officially available in India but the modded one that I got is this only.
PS: Buying a modded PS2 means that there is NO WARRANTY on the console any more.
