Hello All,
You must be in damn dilemma about phone which you are going to have with you. Here is my attempt to help you in this regard. I have this phone with me more than one week. I purchased it for Rs.11800 with 1 GB memory card. Prices are dropping so you may get it at cheaper rates when your time of buy come.
So let's go with my review.
Why I zeroed on w580i:I am computer freek guy and I always look for gadgets which I can alter by my mind. So obvious choice for me was symbian phones. In short I did not have option other than Nokia. Nokia great phone producer. now something wrong is going on in there R&D. My choice was Nokia Xpress Music 5700. Truely it's complete phone. I really love features of this phone. In fact I was firm on my decision that I will go with this chap. But one thing I did not like about this phone is that it's look, what a bulky and dinchak look. It's not something which is not in 100 miles of decency. This is what I think. Only advantage of this phone was screen and symbian. Smart Phone. There are better smart phones but out of my budget of Rs.12000.
One day on https://mobile-review.com I found this little baby called w580i. Everybody has differenet taste. So I found look of this phone attractive. But it's not smart phone. So confusion confusion confusion. this phone caused me to change my specification criteria.
first one Best sound quality: no doubt w series phones has best sound quality. Even Apple Ipod lags behind to this phone. I have Ipod(Shuffle) which is now part of my ancient gadgets.
second one Screen Resolution: 320x240was minimum criteria for me. lot many phones come with this screen size. Brightness of screen. haha. you would like to show this phone to others because of this. It has reflective screen which is very useful for seeing the screen in bright light. No more eye tricks to see the screen in sun light.
third one look: I said everybody has different taste. I found this taste very good. No arguments with others.
fourth one Flash UI: This tells how your phone can have very beautiful and attractive user interface. This is the feature I loved most. I daily show my friends this phone with different themes. Originally phone does not allow to put new flash UI themes. But some cracking can make this phone very beautiful. Now with Flash Lite I can make this phone look like anything. what do you want menu style like iphone, or windows Vista or mac OS X(with transition effects). Literally any thing is possible. I loved this feature most. I already mentioned that I like to play with hardware and software. does your phone allows to record video in 30 fps. my altered phone allows with chaged camera drivers in operating system of phone.
Do not try this because it may break your phone or warrenty will get cancelled. I can risk this thats why I did this.
Now other things:
camera quality: Not par with AF 2 mp camera from cybershot phone. But acceptible in bright light. Infact I am not keen for this feature. I am enthusiast photographer I have big DSLR camera. So I hate cameras in phone. So I dont need this feature.
GPRS/EDGE: Its good. In test I got 100 Kbps speed for Idea EDGE in pune. supported speed is around 250 Kbps.So 100 Kbps due to poor IDEA(what an idea?). surfing is quiet fast. Good inbuilt phone browser.But I would prefer Opera Mini Browser. It's amazing. Good email application. My Gmail and phone email can talk to each other. advantage due to high resolution screen.
Google Maps thing is really fundu application. It can work on any java enabled mobile. You can download it at https://google.com\gmm.
One more feature that this phone is it can synchronise with Microsoft Outlook on your computer. This way you can edit contacts in outlook. When you connect phone to computer automatic synchronising happes silently. Now my phone book has everybodies details with it including emails, address, company, home phone, web and blah blah microsoft outlook things.
Usability: Good one. average you can say. Good feel while sliding. Good phone browser. Good Java Support. 3D performance is also good.
Pleasure while watching video. smooth 30 fps video with 320x240 resolution with very bright LCD display. Nokia's are very behind in this place. Ofcourse nokia can play smooth videos but does not look as bright and colourful as this phone. Slight problem with mp4 videos with high bitrate. But if you are aware of converting video then you can enjoy this part. Video playback is battery eater application for all phones. Pedometer is amazing application. Truely its accuracy is amazing. Measures walking distance, shows me calories burned. I am on a bit heaviour side thats why I loved this feature. FM reception is best in class. I was able to get stereo reception without any problem anywhere in Pune. Calendar, task, Alarms also good. In short UI and usability are cool stuffs with Flash thing.
Other thing which it says in promotions' shake it baby'. Truely unuseful feature. What a mad thing? You have to press a button and shake the phone to play next or previous song. A button press could have acted as button press for next song. Sony might have tried to add more zang with its pedometer mechanism. So totally unuseful feature. Instead you have fear while shaking that you may drop the phone. So how would you feel while droping your Rs.12000 thing.
Other things I tried with bluetooth connection with computer. Worked fine. including for remote desktop control.
Another feature is that it has lights on its sides. Adds appeal of phone. Lights change colors. It looks cool for eyes.
Only thing is that it has plastiky feel when it is in hands. may be because it's lighter. But its ok for me.
Battery life is very good. Easily lasts for two days with lot of music listening and surfing on phone. 3 hours of listening and half hour of surfing.
Good connectivity options for computer.
Other compition for this phone was motorokr z6. But this phone's look does not appeal at all. but it has Linux OS.
If you are smart guy looking for smart phone then go for this phone though this is not smartphone. If you are very smart who can love cracking then also go for this phone. If you loves to listen quality music then you must go for walkmen series phones. If you are nokia fans then surely you can go for nokia. But you will miss sound quality and Flash UI.
