I started looking for a high Mega Pixel camnera (atleast 4 MP) costing less than Rs 15000 and having different picture modes that could let an amateur like me click pics like a pro in varying conditions wiothout haing to fumble for all settings on the camera.

I found the Sony DSC P73 fitting all my requirements - A resolution of 4.1 mega-pixel - good enough for taking poster-size prints - 3X optical zoom, with a . Digital zoom of 4X is an added advantage - In addition to 4-M still images the DSC-P73 captures full motion video - it sports features like a 5-point auto focus system, manual exposure control, multi-pattern metering, scene modes, histogram display and a fast image processor that allows it to capture up to 4 Fine mode images per burst.

There are a total of 9 still image shooting modes, 1 movie mode, a playback mode and a setup mode which perhaps is more than what any budding photograpgher would want. there is also a facility to attach an underwater protection case that allows you to take pictures upto 40m below water!!! - You can even take short movies using the movie mode.

The maximum length of the movie depends on the size of the memory stick you are using. - It comes with a 1.5 inch LCD which can be used as a view-finder and an on-screen-menu which is quite easy to use - The camera comes with a battery charger and USB cords which enables me to directly transfer all my snaps to my PC at the touch of a button.

All necessary software comes in the bundle. I have been having this camera with me for a couple of weeks and pics taken of my Goa trip were just too good. However, a word or two of caution: --expensive memory (only supplied with 16mb). Can store a max of 10 - 12 pics in 4M mode. --the information that is overlaid on the monitor when the camera is use creates a lot of clutter.

The settings, which are shown in small white characters and symbols with faint black outline, are overlaid on the image coming from the lens. And, the small character size combined with the small 1.5 inch screen, can be difficult to decipher. To sum up, the positives of this camera are far too many to take too much note of the negatives. for an amateur photographer on a limited budget wanting a feature rich camera, the P73 is just about right.

Pros : Inexpensive, compact, feature-rich, High resolution, easy-to-use Cons : expensive Memory cards Purchase Price (INR) : between 12000 and 18000 Usage Convenience : Fairly easy to use
