SONY, as a brand name, does wonders when we want to make a choice in the world of electronics. With the kinds of new brands and names and price tags that are hitting the common shopper, SONY is in a league of its own.

The DSC - S600, to the best of my memories (excluding the SONY RV-999D Music System), is the best buy in my life so far. Let me confess, I dropped the dearie once at Yercaud, on concrete, and she's got a few scratches on her side, but she's still the best she was made to be.

The word megapixels doesn't really ring proper bells these days; it is the resolution fineness of the camera sensor. Digital photos are comprised of pixels. One megapixel is equivalent to one million pixels. Today's cameras are available in one to several megapixel resolution formats. A camera that can capture more megapixels can capture more detail and sharpness in a photo. An image with more megapixels can be enlarged and printed without sacrificing image quality.

In digital imaging devices megapixels define the resolution range when the number of pixels is equal to, or greater than 1,000,000 pixels.Found by multiplying the active horizontal by active vertical pixels. (eg SXGA is 1280 x 1024, or 1,310,720 pixels. This could be called a 1.3-megapixel device). The higher the resolution, the more pixels in an image and therefore the greater the image quality. An image file that is 1 megapixel (MP) can make a photo realistic print of 5 x 7 inches; a 2 MP file can make an 8 x 10-inch print; a 3 MP file can make an 11 x 14-inch print, and so on. So 6 MP can give you quite a large print without sacrificing image quality.

The camera is very user friendly, and my wife, who's got nothing to do with electronic gadgets, has become quite attached to the DSC - S600, and will not leave the house without it for even the smallest of events or shows or trips.

It has a 3x digital zoom, which again is good enough for the biggest of trips you would've planned up, unless you're visiting the Amazon or the Kalahari for a photo shoot!!! Up close, or zoomed, all the shoots come out excellent.

The battery life is decent, and the idea is carry around enough backup batteries or a spare set of rechargeables and a charger. This is though, applicable for any electronic portable device, and is not a concern per sae.

The cameras has been designed very ergonomically too, and wraps around your hand well (just don't drop her guys, it hurts deep inside when you do, even though she is a fairly strong woman!!!). The LCD display is also good enough, not too big, not too small. The controls are easy-to-access, though a couple of read-throughs on the manual will help tons. The flash is bright, but it is advisable that during low lights you shoot both with and without flash, cause sometimes the without flash shoot comes out far better, thanks to the high resolution sensor and the Carl Zeiss lens.

The video mode is good enough and can be played back on TV after writing onto a CD/DVD. Fact is, this is a Still Camera, and we should be happy with it, and think of the video mode as a free add-on and not worry about the camera not having a TV out!!!

The biggest drawback is, it comes only with 32MB internal memory and NO add-on memory. You have to separately purchase a Memory Stick. A very good suggestion would be the 1GB SONY Memory Stick Pro-Duo which features faster transfer speeds compared to conventional sticks. It's quite a pinch on the pocket, but being a one time venture, shouldn't haunt your memories for long. So please purchase the stick alongwith the camera, and don't wait for a sale.

You can easily change picture resolution pre/post shoots. And the Camera Suite is fast to pull out the snaps onto your PC, once taken.

So folks, just buy it if you wanna go for a Digital Still Camera, don't think twice. You'll rejoice every moment you spend with the DSC - S600.
