It was the day I had waited for so long… It had been very long since I had coaxed my Paa to buy a LCD TV. Dad was always skeptical about buying because of the restrictive pricing. I could understand actually, the LCD which we bought would have cost us around Rs. 110, 000 a year back. In fact at first he did not find the sense in buying an LCD at all. Why spend so much of money? And the cable picture comes so bad on it, what’s the difference between a normal TV and an LCD TV? That was before TATA Sky, before the LOTR DVDs and before Dad talked to his CTO.

And it took two years, that’s right TWO YEARS to convince dad to finally buy an LCD! PHEW! A huge task that was! But let me begin from the beginning. When I laid my eyes for the first time on an LCD TV it was at the Sony World near my place, at that time there was Plasma, LCD and the S series and V series.

The prices where like outta this world!! Knowing dad, I knew I could not suggest LG or Samsung, he will never buy anything remotely connected to South Korea. Initially he was not much convinced about buying an LCD, then we went to a JBL showroom where dad was speculating of buying a speaker system [But that ended at speculation only ;)]. The guy at the place put on his LCD and showed him LOTR where Gandalf is lighting the fireworks, and dad was half sold!! He actually saw this movie around 3 times.

That’s a lot considering he does not watch a lot of movies.

But even then the extravagant cost hurt, and he was skeptical. Surprisingly he became willing to look at Samsung, LG, even Onida!! He sent me off on a crusade to find which one was the best, and off I went joyful and upbeat. But after submitting a report that Sony was the best, dad came up with his argument that Cable TV was not so great and hence it did not make sense.

I pleaded that we could put a Dish TV connection, but when we went back to Sony World, to see the Sony LCD TVs he had put up Dish TV and it did not look that great, and both of us were discouraged, especially since TATA Sky was going to be launched sometime. And so we waited and waited and waited….. Finally Diwali came, [Dad argues that the event was synchronized with his Diwala ;)] TATA Sky had also arrived, and the price for the Sony Bravia dropped. Dad had talked to his CTO who had advised him to go in for Sony.

Dad was finally satisfied that since TATA Sky had arrived, not only would he get good quality picture but also waiver on installation expenses, one of the main reasons he had waited for TATA Sky (akhir hamare pitashree to TATA employee hone ka fayda to kabhi nahi chodenge). Thus ended the wait. We bought our very own Sony Bravia LCD 32 inches for Rs. 73, 500, a steal, back then! (The current price for it is Rs. 65, 000 at the Sony World outlet so you might get it for 60, 000 outside) And every member of our family fell in love.

It looks so sleek, and when you play DVDs what picture clarity!! After we installed Tata Sky, it was complete viewing pleasure!

The Bravia comes with a huge remote, which we have not used since we got Tata Sky, which is a good thing as I have a knack at spoiling remotes, by sitting on them etc. It has four audio and video in ports plus one HDMI port. It can function as a LCD screen for a computer, the wire for which is bundled along, it has an audio in bundled along for which you can get a wire easily. This helps you hook your PC/laptop with your movies to watch DivX and other movie formats which may not play on your CD/DVD player. Frankly if the price is not a serious constraint, a must buy, you can also consider the 42 inches, I believe the prices for that have also fallen.
