Suckiest home theater ever

I was a big fan of Sony once. I could easily have helped sony sell many products through my own reviews. But no more.

I bought this home theater system in late 2006 and it a headache more so than a luxury. I have cursed it to no end and have complained to the Sony dealer and service men regarding their pathetic product.

To start of with the problems:

  1. It does not recognize 9 of 10 MP4 formats although the manual proudly boasts MP4 support. Even cheap Onkyo or the china DVD players can play formats that this stupid drive refuses to even recognize.

I have to sit and convert every movie I have to standard .divx format before playing.

  1. No support for DVD-RW. Its strict about running only DVD+RW. Its easy to not notice this while buying a DVD-RW and you end up with this player throwing a nasty message - Disc is dirty

  2. The USB support is useless at best. I need to plug my entire system onto the home theater and play the songs on Winamp for it to work. What about directly streaming from my portable MP3 player? No support for that either

  3. It DOES NOT HAVE A LINE IN JACK! I finally thought of plugging in my iPod to play a few songs and found that there is no Line-In jack. All it has is a Karaoke In(MIC) which does not balance the sound ouptut well and causes reverberations. There is a difference between a MIC jack and a Line-In jack - If Sony needs to be taught that.

  4. The pompous Subwoofer is hardly good for producing even the slightest bass even in a small room. And over time, even this degrades and I hardly sense any bass even if I sit next to the subwoofer now

  5. It has 2 cassette players - with gaping openings in its doors. I opened up the door one day to find it clogged with huge balls of dust. Real world products will consider making this aleast a little more air sealed.

  6. A/V Sync is the main issue in most DivXs played. The disc jams for a second and the rest of the movie is rendered un-watchable because the sound goes out of sync with the video and there seems no way to get it back in sync. The manual boasts of an A/V Sync button - which when activated for DivXs throws the error - Operation Not Supported! Its meant for DVDs only.

All in all it was an absolute waste of investment and I have vowed never to let another SONY product enter my house again. For the extra money they ask, their recent products are just eye-wash and that the sooner the public realises this, the better and the earlier they can be sent packing. Cmon, for the prices they charge, I could have easily set up 2 home theater systems which would be more robust and satisfying and those that did not need a computer to convert every movie before being played.
