Lessons Learnt:
DO NOT BUY ANY SONY products labeled "Made in India"
Service IS PATHETIC and down right dis-honest.
You just may have better luck with "Made in Japan, etc." You MIGHT avoid servicing hassles.
I am including a date wise summary below. We have given up on this product and WE NO LONGER BUY anything SONY. Once bitten Twice Shy.
I hope this helps a prospective buyer.

Background:
Within couple of months of purchase, the DVD/CD mechanism started giving problems. We did not immediately get it repaired as we very rarely used the movie viewing function. We usually use it as a music player system.

We finally took it for repairs to M/s. Club Electronics(Sony Authorised Service Center).
We received the repaired set after nearly a week.
We started experiencing more problems with the repaired system viz.
-Loss of settings like front panel display settings, radio station settings, etc.
-The system was no longer auto-tuning radio stations nor retaining manually preset stations.
-The main power button stopped working smoothly. It needed several pushes before it worked.
On complaining, Sony person visited but could not repair the problem specially the auto-tuning feature. He claimed that the radio station(s) signal strength was low.
This is hard to believe as this function(and the others as listed above) was working perfectly well before repairs. Furthermore this argument MAY hold true for one radio station BUT not ALL of them!
It was also explained to us that the various settings will be lost if the system is not used for more than 32 or 48 hours. This seems to be a ridiculous constraint. Typically we would use the system maybe once a week or once in two weeks. The reason for this low usage is that both of us(husband and wife) are working and we rarely have time to watch movies on a regular basis.

Finally Sony took away the system for repairs and returned it claiming that the problems have been rectified. Offcourse they were not. And as usual we did not take much notice as we did not much use the system.

The DVD/CD mechanism problem again re-appeared. By this time the warranty had expired. We registered a complaint with Sony and also informed them that the warranty had expired but we expected the problems to be rectified free of cost as they had not been solved during the warranty period.

Sony person visited and observed the problem and said that we can not repair the problem because the warranty was over.
After sometime, Mr. Amit of Club Electronics called us and asked us to get the system to their works. He said that he will try to get the system repaired free of cost.
All this prompts us to think that the system we bought had manufacturing defect(in the DVD/CD mechanism) and due to improper repair/replacement of components the main board has suffered damage thus resulting in the other problems. In the worst case the main board may have been swapped with an inferior/old board.
