She thinks:
*Am I still attractive to that man?
Am I wrinkling already? Gosh the cellulite is killing my jeans fitting! Will he look at the bags under my eyes? Am I too saagy?
He Thinks:
*There goes a beauty on two legs and so fresh and young! Ahhh. to be that age! Is the flab around my middle that bad that she didnt even look at me! Is my hairline receeding? Can I get it up when I hit the sack with her? Am I still the same jack hammer that I used to be? hehehehe.
Somethings Gotta Give!
Nancy Meyers written & directed hollywood, completely American, masala flick, goes beyond the realm of real life! But truthfully, it is all about that already. Nancy has given us films like The Parent Trap, What Women Want and more recently The Holiday. She has a penchant for adult comedy and she does it in style. Maybe she suffers from the same symptoms or is going through it herself! Her depiction is so real and so amazingly believable that you can only sit and think that, "hey am I really all that?". But do not fret, you do not need to take these real life questions seriously. Sit back and enjoy as this story unfolds.
Harry Sanborn(Jack Nicholson), is a rich business baron who owns a record company that has translated into a success story of sorts. Currently he is prancing with a nubile nymph called Marin Barry(Amanda Peet), who is pretty, has got the starry eyed look of someone in love and is soaked in that bubble which tingles. Harry and Marin have decided to take the weekend off and have snucked away to her weekend beach house where they are looking forward to the sun, sand and the waters as also the'ROMP' in the sack that Harry has been so excited about! As they start to unwind and palyfully undress, Marins mother, a very celebrated authoress Erica Barry(Diane Keaton), looking absolutely ravishing and in her early fifties with all the jitters mentioned above, enters the scene and ourjumpin' Jack does a Wee Willie Wonka:)!
Erica has chosen the same moment to write, and destiny has chosen that same moment to write a different future altogether! What follows is a typical American masala filled with sexual innuendos, handled very maturedly though and a feigned heart attack by Harry. Enter the youthful and handsome DocJulian Mercer(Keanu Reeves).Now begins a roller coaster ride of who courts who! This is indeed a chapter that Nancy Meyers has ahndled very delicately and very maturedly at the same time. Thus begins the **Candy romance of a successful 60 plus man clutching the last straw and his heart, 50 plus woman who is intrigued by the attantion of a 30 year old Doc(ohh that can mean a lot to American women;)).
The musings are very interesting. The long walk on the beach between Harry and Erica where he is trying toprove his virility to her and a look at the staircase which reminds Harry of the test for virility are very nicely picturised. When Erica comes back from her so called date with her new young beau, the exchange of mails between Harry and Erica leading to a'Pyjama Party' post midnight and which eventually leads them both to hit the sack together (finally!) is too funny! Then comes the feeling of being religious after a great physically tiring party!
What happens next? What happens between Marin and Harry? Does Julian get the sexy Erica where he wants her?
You need to call the DVD rental guy and watch this film!
I call this film a complete american masala because it reminds you of some silly, romantic with high sexual undertones of films like American Pie, Going Steady etc. Complete Candy floss film because the movie is shoot on breathtaking locales, amazing houses, and of course anything rich in luxury, style, colors is easy on the eyes.Cinematography is virtually like 1, 2, 3. Place the camera anywhere, fit the artists in the frames and voila, you have a beautiful picture!
I recommend this film for the sheer mature handling of a masala subject and of course Jack Nicholson, in his trademark playboy style and the really gorgeousDiane Keaton and not to forget the truly good looking, easy on the eyes with a neat boy - next - door looks Keanu Reeves.Of course I do not want to take anything away from the pretty Amanda Peet,but its easier understanding triangles than quadrilaterals, right?
Its a good film to watch with your sweetheart and assure her and yourself that even if the dynamics of your physical beings are changed or changing everyday, **theres still so much more of each other that you can get!
