That was the time when I was racist. Today after no more bearing about myprevious life 300 years ago I am a global citizen born in India. I love how the West works and I love how the West ridicules our country. I am out hereto review the over hyped, overrated, cinematic piece of masterful perfection todepict India to a deviating world of stereotype as to how the West the so called developed nations or those following the developed nations look at us.
Heck, its been almost 2 years since I have written on this site, feels good andin a way I am thankful to Slumdog Millioinaire for giving me the enthu to come up and voice my write up among the barrage of recommending reviews(87% ofthem)
The very essence of seeing Slumdog Millioinaire is the story of rags to riches, the inevitable fate for an underdog who despite all odds wins and unites with his love. Interesting plot, interesting circumstances and very interestingfinale. This is just another level of bollywood potboiler which with a decent starcast like Shahid Kapoor and Amitabh as a host would have been a good boxoffice earner.
But for those 10 nominations, the Golden Globes, the papparrazi and so much attention, something had to be added to this film, but they removed the BOLLYWOOD from the film and added everything Firangi. A Firangi Director, firangi accented lead pair, firangi crew, production studio and for the saving grace had Irrfan khan and Anil Kapoor with few known supporting names.
So the very distinction of not going GAGA over this film is the fact that mypride with the film ends with AR Rahman and Gulzaar, coz of their independent and meaty involvement with the project, except that its just another Hyped up, tossed up by the Media movie which is grabbing all the attention at the cost of our pride, honor and being an Indian.
So now those who are supporting Slumdog Loser saying that the film shows Indianreality and does well. I must tell you I will take any other documentary on slums that are dime a dozen on Discovery, BBC and all other Garibi Hatao channels which for some or the reason chose India as the R&D facility totake the cause against slums and poor people.
My diatribe against this film is the fact as per its depiction which is semireal to suit to sensibilities of the target audience and not the actual ones which exist.
The film itself is a plethora of coincidences. With Jamal's narration of the entire on
goings as to how every question relates to his life and that was the reason he could answer those questions, is all cool. Coz us being bollywood fans for long, this much amount of cinematic liberty is tolerable.
But I doubt if its cinematic liberty there, it looks more of a purposeful blasphemy to show ghastly situations about India in a ridiculing sense of humor.
Our slum dwellers are all shrewd, wicked cons, conning the daylights of all the tourist arriving in India. This may be reality but boss who has asked you to visit Slums and Tents. Remember Circuit says “Tum logo ko bhukenange hi dikhte hai kya, you don’t see Taj Mahal”. The film is so true on these lines, it shows bhuke nange and then it shows Taj Mahal. HUH!.
Mark my words, had this been an all out Indian film, thesame would have gone down into the dungeons of great unnoticed, unnecessary reality films made for bespectacled, artsy lovers.
That’s my so called 2 cents on this film, for me I could care less about reviewing this movie since it has 10 Oscar noms, a pride onefor ARR and Gulzaar. However, the same composition of ARR in the movie for meis pretty lame and average if you compare it to his other works, but see Gori Chamdi got the Damdi:P.
So those who support this film, I would say good for youguys go ahead and hail the West and prolong its stereotypical bifocals on India, for me I am happy with the West, with their Robots, Sci fi and Superhero films and our Indian masala films.
Sinister Intellect has been the sole reason for the fall of Wisdom.
